When I bought my SKS though it was a Norinco, it was much more highly finished than the one my son has. I mentioned this to the seller he replied "It's state arsenal, your son's was intended for sale only. This is built for use by the Chinese Military. It's much harder to find "
It is much nicer than my son's, most notably the trigger guard and metal on the floor plate/magazine
Was he having me on? I still got it for a great price, just wondering if anyone else has heard this story?
Thanks
Still no camera, but thanks to yooper john's I've got # 316 inside tri-angle / no chinese characters / matching S.N's 04429 / highly milled trigger guard.
Registration says Norinco but no marking as such on the gun

Camera fell of my truck hood ( Dead ) but I'll look in my folders. It's got an ATI folding stock( but I have the original). Blade type bayonet like the Russian version's.

I would think the reverse is more likely. They don't have to impress their military with better-finished rifles, but it makes a big difference to a capitalist consumer.

Just tell us what's written on the left side of the receiver and describe other markings you see elsewhere, that should do the trick.
Any marking like digits in a triangle or such?
Is there an inverted "U" on the rear sight elevator?
PP.

the seller is correct with the exception that the same arsenal could have produced for both the military (in early years ) and commercial (later years) .

china has produced the SKS longer than any other country and during that time they made the most changes to the original russian SKS, since the late 60s they embarked on a cost saving measure of producing the SKS, in doing so the quality suffered, it so happened the chinese military stopped having it produce for them sometime in the early 80s . therefore yours were built earlier (aka as early chinese/military) and your sons were built later (could be a norinco/commercial) .

Blade type bayonet like the Russian version's.

the early chinese did come with original blade bayo.

Blade bayonets can be bought on fleabay, one has to look at the whole rifle, and it's overall fit and finish (not to mention the serial number) in order to figure anything out.

If it has the blade bayonet, I am wondering if it is a "Sino-Soviet" rifle. When the Russians first handed over the production of the SKS to the Chinese, apparently a lot of Russian manufactured spare parts went over as well. This lead to a combination of (obviously) non matching Russian and Chinese parts making up early production rifles.
If you check out yooperjohns SKS page, it may help you clarify what you have....

Blades were used until the late 60s so it means nothing. If its a Factory /26\ with a russian ser# then its a Sino.

yes there is an inverted 'U' on base of the site
Also the S.N. is in low 1,300,000's

is there any other marks or symbol before or after the SN?

if a triangle with 26 after the SN ? then yours is built in 1957 (very early chinese).

Tri-angle has /316\ marked to the left of S.N.
The tri-angle is partly covered by an ATI folder stock. I'm going into town Sat, I'll pick-up a cam then and post pic's Sat eve.
Thanks for your help
