Has anyone used a steel grain bin for camping during fall/winter hunting season on the prairies?

The only habitable buildings left on my uncles farm are the steel grain bins; they've been empty for a few years and I'm thinking one could plop a wood stove in the middle as a heat source, but I'm not sure if the steel would conduct too much of the heat out for it to actually be worthwhile.

So what say you CGN, anyone tried with success?

Old bins may have wood floors which makes mold a possibility and steel is a poor insulator. I'd rather take a trailer or wall tent.

Unless those bins were very well cleaned out after they were last used I would expect them to be moused all to hell. You can also expect the inside to be full of spider webs with chaff and grain dust clinging to the walls. If you do decide to use it to sleep in make sure you come a day early with a ladder, brooms, shovels and clean the crap out of it.

If it's long term use.. spray foam it.
I've seen a couple smaller ones out by Kingsville turned into pools too.

Clean it up best you can then put a good wood stove in there and giver. For heaven's sakes when I grew up on the farm there were always mice in our house. And as far as wall tents go mice find them as a nice abode as well. A warning though! Make sure you can unlatch the door from the inside. That could be a bad day.

My hunt camp/lodge was entirely grain bins, or, as the clients called them, the "Holiday Bins", 14', 19', and 30' for the kitchen. Spray foam the inside of the roof and 2' down the walls, put in bunks and shelving, and a good kerosene heater and lantern, cover the top port with plexi with a 5" hole for kero exhaust, and you're all set. Bear proof, weather proof, and you can go as elaborate as you want!

The door would be my only concern. Generator and grind/cut in a man door. Wear a dust mask when sweeping it out due to the hantavirus. Open the lid on top a bit and condensation shouldn't be a problem. Some treat them much like a teepee.

Thanks everyone, a good cleaning would be top of list with the next item down being addressing the latch on the door (that was first thing on my mind). I'm not looking long term right now as I don't know if the home section will remain in the family so I'm not going to get too elaborate. Wood stove, 2 or 3 simple wood frame bed platforms for unrolling a sleeping pad on and I'd put a stack on the stove tall enough to reach the open port on top to exhaust straight outside (don't want smoke or soot buildup inside).

Fk the dust mask, get a real respirator if you're worried about hantavirus - doesn't it have a very high fatality rate if you get it?

Huh?

Is your auto correct broken?

You must be new here. Lol
