bought my first shotgun yesterday. Remington 870 Express 3 barrel combo. 28 inch barrel with mod. choke, turkey barrel with full choke tube. I have heard that steel shot is ok with mod choke or less. Does this sound correct ?

Thanks. I'll go to my local gun shop this week and see what I need. I just checked the choke tubes and the full choke says lead only and the mod says nothing so I'm assuming that means lead or steel. I'm starting to see tyhat shotgun ammo is a complicated subject and I need to more educated.

What are you planning on shooting with it?

You can use lead on everything except migratory birds, and lead is superior to steel in every way. When hunting ducks and geese I usually use Improved cylinder. Sometimes I use MOD but its rare.

And yes, your MOD choke is fine for steel or lead.

Exactly! I also use IC almost exclusively! With lead it's an IC pattern, with steel it's a Mod pattern. Works fine in all the hunting I do.

I'm new at shotguns and saw an article on the net saying not to use steel with a choke tube. I was on-line and found a deal on some ammo but it doesn't say whether it's steel or lead so being new I wasn't sure if I should take it or not. So if I use the mod choke it shouldn't matter. I'm new enough that I just want to get a bunch ammo to take to local range and get used to this gun and have some fun as I continue to get more educated.

Usually if its a newer shotgun that you've purchased any of the chokes that come with the gun are good with steel or lead... Including the full choke. If there not compatible with steel it will be marked on the choke "lead only"
