Steel shot in 1970's Wingmaster?

Haven't shot at a duck for 35 years - looks like I will be having some time this year!! I have an early 1970's Wingmaster, Standard Weight (12 ga. frame, 20gauge barrel) with Modified Choke. Have been essentially "under a rock" regarding shotgunning, and have not kept up at all with what is needed / possible for using waterfowl steel shot in a shotgun of that era. What is the consenus?? - don't do it / use only "smaller" shot / get forcing cone reamed / other?

Yes you can as long as it is not full choke. As you are modified you should be good to go.

Find some Remington 2 3/4" #4 steel and get them in close. It will work.

No worries with the older Wing. It will either handle 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells. As far as steel, for ducks use 2/3/4's. Or for Geese, Single B or 1/2's. We kill a bunch of geese with 20 ga, 3 inch #2 Kents.

You can always try a non-tox like Bismuth. A little more money than steel but it shoots similar to lead.

OP didn't mention Wingmaster was 3" However 2 3/4 steel will work fine through a Mod. Fixed choke.

Not real sure that it matters regarding the use of steel shot or not, but the barrel has a 2 3/4" chamber.

Doesn't matter as long as you're using 2 3/4" shells.

The only way it matters is being slightly harder to find steel loads, but not by much. Your local gunstore should be able to bring them in for you if they aren't stocked.

I have found federal 2 3/4" steel in 20 bore at Canadian Tire. 20 steel has comparatively light charge weights so increase your pellet count with #4. Teal and woodies will succumb to #6 and geese over decoys (remember head and neck) are fair game with #4 in the 20 bore. Remember I am talking 20 to 30 yards NOT 55 yards passing shots.
