Some guy at the range advised us against using steel shot for our 870s unless the gun was specifically designed to take it. But I have been reading the hunting regulations and lead shot seems to be banned (in a lot of areas)

Is what he was saying true?

lead shots are banned only over lakes and rivers, and when you are shooting megritory birds....steel shot can be used in you Rem-870....no problems.....
as far as I know, steel shot can be used in a shotgun if:
1. shotgun has a removable chock(-s)...
2. in permanent chocks bigger than modefied chock...

I don't want to nit-pick but...screw in tubes should also be Mod. or more open unless they are designed for Steel shot!

Different manufacturers have different guidelines for the use of steel shot in older barrels. Apart from the risk of barrel damage, steel shot is generally thought to pattern better from a more open choke than lead shot. Usually steel shot should not be used in older doubles, regardless of choke. IIRC Remington policy is that the worst that can happen to an 870 is the formation of a slight ring at the choke, which is cosmetic only. Browning's policy is that steel only be used in barrels especially intended for it. Some waterfowlers have had older barrels reamed to modified, or even better, reamed and threaded for tubes. With proper tubes, the versatility of the gun is enhanced, and correct tubes for steel may be installed.

Lead shot doesn't "seem" to be banned, it is, and as you read on page 17 of the regs synopsis, the use of toxic (lead) shot for hunting waterfowl has been prohibited in B.C. since 1995 and in Canada since 1997.

The ban applies to the type of game bird (waterfowl), not to area.

You are allowed to use lead shot on upland game birds, but you're not likely to shoot a blue grouse on a salt water marsh or a chukar flying over a lake.

Must be a provincial regulation.
