Steel Shot in Noble Model 60 pump shotgun?

I just recently inherited several shotguns including a Noble Model 60 pump action shotgun with the adjustable choke (markings 15 to 40 assumed to be yards where 15 might be a cylinder choke??). It is in incredibly good condition, I would say very good, no rust or pitting and an excellent bore. Can steel shot be used in this shotgun providing the choke is set to modified or possibly a bit more open? I realize that I will need to do some pattening to get an idea of what the various settings are likely do to the shot pattern. Any suggestions on a suitable range or distance to do shot patterns? I was thinking 30 yds.

thanks in advance,

A bit more open than modified with steel shot sizes 2 to 4 won't really cause any problems with your choke device and give a good pattern at 30 yards, even for waterfowl.

I think you are referring to a choke system known as a 'wonder winder'; a blob of steel hanging off the end of your barrel you adjust by turning. If so, I have been told by many a gunsmith not to shoot steel shot through such a system, no matter what the setting. Not to hurt your feelings but Noble shotguns were not that great to begin with. Save it for the (lead) trap and skeet fields.

Shootshellz;

I just thought that I would ask. I realize that Noble shotguns are not great or else they would probably still be in production. This one will probably become a camp gun.

thanks for your feedback.

Your old Noble will handle steel in sizes #2 and smaller with that adj. choke set at MOD or more open. Adjustable chokes make the gun MORE steel friendly not less. If you shoot enough steel loads some day maybe you will detect some scoring in the bore. Just keep shooting it, not an issue in terms of safety. Noble pumps were not fancy but they were purchased alot by people that usually used them hard (farmers, ranchers) and they worked.

'nuff said, Darryl

I beg to differ with madtrapper: ANY 'wonder winder' (read: external) choke is NOT suitable for steel shot. If you unwind the collet you will find the barrel is cut into separate 'fingers' at the end of the barrel. Those 'fingers' are not made to take the stress of having steel shot pass through them, no matter what the constriction. Buy a modern firearm with an internal choke tube system if you need to use steel shot.

The band of steel (collet) that constricts the fingers actually makes the muzzle (choke) area stronger than a regular fixed choke barrel. Have a look at the POLY CHOKE web site.

Obviously there is a disagreement here. Best take your Noble shotgun to a gunsmith and see what he advises. But in my experience older shotguns + 'wonder winders' + steel shot = trouble.
