Steel target loads - Does anyone else have trouble finding them?

Hi guys,

Living in Ottawa has its benefits, but ammo selection isn't one of them. I have looked (what seems like) everywhere in the city but no one has any. I am working in Montreal but don't have a vehicle so buying ammo is challenging to say the least. I was hoping someone might have an idea where to find some. Montreal, Ottawa, Perth, even Kingston isn't off the table as I pass pretty close on the way to the cabin.

It doesn't seem that any of the online dealers nearby carry steel target loads either. Plenty of hunting steel, but the shot size is a little too big for clay shooting and I can't imagine a full choke will like it very much.

I know the logical solution is to just shoot lead, but I will be shooting over a lake. Anyone have suggestions?

Mitch

you might have to look around, I don't think i have seen them in any suppliers in southwestern Ont. I thinks thaey are a very small piece of the over all market

I am getting that impression, it seems very few carry it at all and those that do are sold out. Gagnon sports can get Kent steel loads in for 80$ a flat plus $10 shipping. This seems a little high to me, I've always figured steel loads should be cheaper than lead.

i dont think there is any law that say you need to use steel to shoot clays over a lake
You are probably right, I just don't like the idea of loading up our rather small lake with lead shot. Maybe I'm overreacting, it's quite possible the plastic wads will cause more damage than the lead ever will.

They are advertising some at le Baron Outdoors in Ottawa, (1512 Merivale Road, Ottawa, Ontario (613) 596-4415) here is the link: http://www.lebaron.ca/pdf_files_fall12/f12specials_winAA.pdf. At one point, they had them for sure in Montreal. They are, Xpert Game and Target Steel Shot Loads. Depending on the clay you are using, it may not be that environmentally friendly either to shoot them over a lake.

Good luck

These are exactly what I'm looking for, but both the Montreal and Ottawa Lebarons are out of stock. I left them with my number to call me when they come in, but they couldn't give me an idea when they'll have them. I'll just have to try back in a couple weeks.

Why would you think steel ammo should be cheaper than lead? Costs more to manufacture. I have shot the Kent stuff and it works very well. FS

The plastic will float, get a net and scoop it out. FS

Not to be a stick in the mud but don't get caught throwing clays over water in Ontario. If caught you will be charged with polluting! I got that first hand from a friend and fellow member at my home club.He purchased a used Winchester Trap thrower from our club and mounted it on the front porch of his hunt camp up near Gogama. C.O's showed up to check out all the shooting going on at his camp and charged him with polluting for throwing the targets out into the lake.
