How do you get the oil out for carding after rusting.

Burn it out. Or try brake cleaner. - dan

Rinse it out a few times with lacquer thinner or acetone.

Something I have used with sucess, soak your steel wool with "Simple Green" and rinse under hot water. If you are going to do any amount of carding and have time, get a 4 row brushing wheel from Brownells. Good luck

Caution on burning it out. Steel wool will burn.

I don't bother and so far have not had a problem with oil in the wool. I degrease the barrel(s) by a wipe down with acetone followed by washing with lye to saponify any remaining oil.

You can also use rubbing alcohol.

If you are "carding" the metal when either bluing or browning, you have to remove the oil in the steel wool prior to using it, otherwise it will streak the chemical on the metal, potentially ruining the finish.

"...Steel wool will burn..." Yep. Makes a great fire starter.
Use a sponge to apply cold bluing.
