Hello Nuters, What Steel is ideal for shooting, rifle cals? Just wondering.

Anything with a hardness in excess of 50 HRC works pretty well, I made some from 4340(mod) that are hanging at my shooting club and standing up very well to some pretty heavy use.

Is there anyone in Canada making steel targets that will take up to .308win? Lots of American companies, but I'm doubling the cost of the targets just through shipping...
Serious inquiry to any welders or dealers. I want to buy two, maybe a third silhouette steel targets that will take repeated (2000?) hits of .308win ball or 7.62x39 mild AP. Needs to have it's own stand... don't care if the post is a 2x4 that is meant as a crumple zone (like MGM Targets).

Most any welding shop will be able to make them up for you.
We've built a bunch of steel targets at our club. None were "professionally" built but you'd never know it. Our last set came from a 4x8 sheet of AR500 that we bought and had cut into the shapes required by the dealer. The stands were made by range members.
This was my solution:
The plates are half inch thick T21 Ultra Wear Plate that has been cut to shape with a plasma torch. They saw many thousands of rounds of .308 FMJ with no ill effects at all before I sold them to a fellow 'nutter to finance torching out some different shapes that I've since put many more thousands of rounds into. They were not cheap to make, but their longevity seems like they were worth it.
Not sure if I would be using AP rounds on them...although I am not sure what you mean by "mild AP".

How much would people pay for a decent personal "gong" target...? $100...? $200..? More..?
The gongs themselves seem to go for about $50-$100 for a 10" AR500 round plate, online & before shipping costs.
I could have some of these plates made up locally, and farm the welding out to a friend... Not sure at what cost though, I would guess $150 each in just materials...
