Anybody ever try Steiner Military/Marine 8x30 binos ? They run under $300 from Wholesale Sports but I was curious as to the quality relative to binos in a similar price range....

Excellent quality for the money good light gathering ability, decent field of view based on the size, very rugged and extremely water proof, however shop around in the US they can be had for much better pricing.

My friend has the Steiner Military marine 7x35 and they suck IMHO. I don't like the individual eye piece focus (eye strain), the poor eye relief, clarity, and they're not very bright, dark actually compared to my Bushnell Legend 8x42 roof's. The Legends around the same price, and blow them away.

Wow. I've got a pair of the military marines and I fkn love them! Anyone else who's ever looked through them has said the same thing.
The individual eye focus causes eye strain? Maybe if you had it set wrong? Eye relief? I use them with safety glasses on no problem. Are we talking about the same thing here?

btw, I got them from Cabelas, I think it was $200 USD.

I've got a pair of Steiner 8x30 Predators, very similar to the miltary marine and although the optics are not bad and the individual permanent focus eyecups seem to work ok too, I do have one MAJOR complaint and it is a design flaw IMO. Each eyecup uses two very small plastic wafer thin serated pieces that are molded onto the lense barrel. These tiny serated pieces are what grip the individual lense barrel by the eyepiece when you focus it. These things are made so flimsy that if you bump the eyepiece or drop the binos, even only a minor fall, these things break. I have already sent mine back once for this and they gave me a new pair. Now, less than a year later THE SAME FLIMSY PLASTIC PIECE IS BROKEN AGAIN on the replacement pair they sent me and I will have to send them back AGAIN:mad: Mil-spec tough my ass. This is totaly unacceptable IMO. Not for what is supposed to be a $400.00 pair of binos. NEVER AGAIN! There are much better binos for the money. When I contacted Steiner and suggested they have a design flaw with this model they firmly stated that "their binoculars do not have flaws". These things would not last a day in the military let alone 20 or 30 years or whatever their warranty is supposed to be. So buy at your own risk and consider yourself warned.

Steiner

I have a pair of Police 7X50 and I really like them. However, I'm concerned by the comments some members made about them.
I choose them after looking thru several models for as long as the store clerk tolerate my presence!
I hope mine won't come appart but all in all I'm very happy with them.
Regards,
Eric

The pair I used were 7x35 Steiner military Marine, and I've compared them side-by-side over the years with my Tasco world class plus 7x42's, Burris Fullfield 8x40's and Bushnell Legends 8x42's and mine were all way better.

I have to take my glasses off to see through them as they have no screw in or folding eyepieces like my other binos.

I don't like their permanent focus system either because once you set the eyepieces to your eyes that's it, your eyes do all the focusing creating eye fatigue. I prefer a focus wheel and let the binos do the focusing.

Steiners do have their better quality line Binos with the focus wheel like their Peregrines which are supposed to be really good. Maybe they've improved the "military marines" coatings over the years, but I don't know.

Bino technology has come far in the last few years and for the price their are many options to look at like the Bushnell Legends and Nikon Monarchs. BTW, You don't see any "birders" praising their "military marines".

I have the 7X50 Commander III with the electronic compass and lit reticle. They are out of this world. I compared them to my friend Leica Geovid's, much more money, and the Steiner optics are better, but the added feature of the lser range finder would make them perfect. optically, they could not get any better.

Well, I chanced it and I ordered a pair up. I just looked at the Commander series and they seem quite nice as well... hmmm... Damn this site - always finding ways to make me spend my money *LOL*
