Seen these 8x30s carried now by Canadian tire. I looked them up and they seemed to get decent reviews for a ~$300 CAD bino. I don't know much about Steiner brand I'm just wondering if anyone here has them? I don't mind Porro's prisms I have a set of Nikon 7x50 that are pretty nice but rather big and bulky. These Steiner are much smaller and handier. But how good quality?

Thanks in advance for any info

I had a similar set of Steiners that I got from Cabela's, and although they weren't horrible optically, the construction quality seemed to be sorely lacking. They quickly went badly out of collimation, despite very little use and generally careful handling. Eventually the plastic hinge pin connecting the barrels broke, and I removed it, sawed off the "arms" that supported the barrels, and ended up with two very nice monoculars. One lives in each of my vehicles now and they both see a fair bit of use. This was easy to do with individual-focussing eyepieces, probably not a good idea with centre-focus models.

Ha that was some good thinking! Not a very positive review on the Steiner, the lower end ones anyways. I do still like porro prisms and some further research has turned up a few high quality models by makers such as Fuginon, Nikon and even Swarovski still has their Ha##### line of porro's. I will keep reading. I would like to invest in a nice piece of glass someday and it seems there are still some relative bargains to be had in good porro binos if you hunt around.

I believe that Steiners are the only binocular I have been present when they failed...objective came loose.
