Iam thinking about buying a pair of Steiner 8x30 military marine bino's anybody here own a pair ? would like some input from anyone that owns a pair. Thanks

like all steiners, paying for the name- go lieca or swar instead- i know, i spent 5 years in a repair shop fixing the likes - there's BETTER values out there- the 8 power isn't bad, but you'll want a bigger objuective for serious viewing- like a 40- that gives you about ideal weight for size- if you go with 30, there's not enough light gathering to cover dusk and dawn

Love them..........

Not sure about the military model however, I have the predator models, both the 8x30 for 5-6 years and I think the other is 10x40 that I have had for two years... the 8x30 is a perfect compromise for size and the larger pair are awesome. You just done get any clearer for the money. Tough as nails to boot, mine have rolled of the roof of the hunting truck a time or two. Still work great.

Gord.

i tried all kinds of optics they never seem to last, especially when i carried them in the passanger box on my rincon.then i bought a pair merlin 10x42 stieners.these are the clearest optics i tried yet and seem to rugged.so far

And these are no "names" you're paying for?

At least they are all made in Germany (Swarovski in Austria I guess).

steiner veels they have the RIGHT to charge more for less- at least lieca has a reputation in both the KAMERA world and the TELESCOPE , as well as geodesic- actually, some of ve best "glass" can come out of the most forsakken factories- it depends on your "grinder " or lensmakkar- the guy i studied under came out of heerbrug, and he was one taskmaster , let me tell you- anyway, long story short, one that's never mentioned in kanada is MINOX, which make EXCELLENT lenses and kameras- i've also seen pverfect out of b&l( not bushnell, altho they do have the odd one) k-mart, westlar, and a bunch of others- quality is NOT related to price, but PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP- you will learn this if you ever take a telescope class at a university or technical college- where you build your own ASTRONOMY telesope FROM LENSES AND TUBES

Bought 2 Steiner 8x30 Beyreuth armored binos back in the early eighties for less than $250.00 each One black and one green. Both with mil-scale. Had to have the black one worked on for new lube last year, but great otherwise.

Sounds like I should consider a set of the golden ring leopold binos at least they have a lifetime warranty like their scopes??? any thoughts??

Not that simple. I always found Leopold overpriced for their quality.

I like to try out optics myself to see how their "sweetspot" is.
I bought all my camera lenses and binos by going to a new/used camera stores and actually comparing all the same brand focal length and f-stop lenses to see if any of them "pop" into focus. Those are the great lenses.

I had a pair just like that a few years back and while they seemed rugged I did not like the optics. I finally sold them and got Nikons instead which were a lot clearer and crisper. I did like the idea of focusing once with the eye pieces and leaving it but they just did not seem to be that clear and bright. I think there's a lot better models for the money unless you really like that green armored military look.

I have a set of 8x30 for hunting and 10x50 steiner Miltary Marine for general use. The 8x30s weight about a pound. They are nice. No fog issues and they work well and are tough. For the money they are a good choice. The 10x50s are nice but heavier and larger making them less ideal for some uses.

Hey T-star Leica is great and all...but its about 6 times the price for the binos, their rifle scopes are similarily high priced.

I have a pair of really old (25 years) of the 7x50 mil spec Steiners. Great glasses. I have had the opportunity to compare them to just about everything on the market and haven't found anything I wanted to spend big $$ on to replace them. Friggin awesome in low light conditions and tough as nails.

I have a pair of Steiner 10x42 C5's. These are one of Steiners latest offerings and come with their 30 year warranty. I have found them to be an excellent mid-high end set of glasses.

I have the 8x30 Steiner Predators, and can't say that I'm blown away by them. Optical quality is good, not great...nowhere near Zeiss or Swaro, and not even equal to a pair of Minox I have that cost similar money. They are porro prisms, and so they have a nice "3D" effect that is more pronounced than in my roof prism types. They are very lightweight, and their durability has been excellent...I haven't babied them at all. The fixed focus system they use limits their close-focus a great deal. In order to get a clear image of something much closer than about 45 feet away, you need to refocus both eyepieces separately, which is slow.

They stand out for one purpose, IMO, and that is extreme cold weather use. They have never fogged on me, and the fixed focus design means that I don't have to constantly fiddle with any adjustments with heavy gloves and/or frozen fingers. I like them for that use, but I would never recommend them as an all-around binocular.

Where can someone purchase a set of Steiners? I mean, walk in somewhere, hold, fondle, and carress them. Not just purchasing over the internet. Looking in the Lower Mainland.

I have used the Steiner Military Marine HD's in the field and I wasn't very impressed with them at all. They're a very rugged pair of binoculars, but there is just something about them... I find that my eyes strain when I'm looking through them, I don't know if it's just the eye cups or the relief or what, but I just don't use them anymore.
What I do love and I make sure I have with me when I'm in the field, are a set of Leupold Tactical bino's. I've had these things everywhere with me, from very hot sandy areas, to wet bushy areas, to very cold and dry areas and find that they are very rugged and durable. I got the ones with the mildot reticule, which I find only somewhat useful since it's hard to range with something that isn't on a stable base, but I guess you could get a rough estimate with them. They are 10x50 which is plenty of magnification for what I need them for and I find that the optical clarity on them is excellent. I see them sold in the store for $800, but I was fortunate enough to get them on Ebay for $415. If you can find a deal like that then you're laughing, otherwise $800 is alot, but I really like them, so I would probably pay it. Further to that, I'm a pretty big fan of Leupold products in general. Whenever I have had an issue with anything I've gotten the product back very quickly and always either fixed, or replaced entirely. In fact, I just sent a pair of Leupold Mesa binos back because I lost one of the eye cups (totally my fault... actually my buddies fault), and I asked them if they could clean them because they'd been through alot. Not only did they fix the problem, they sent me a brand new pair of Mesa binos at no cost to me other then the shipping I paid to get them there... you can't beat there service in my opinion.
Anyways, that's just my 2 cents for what it's worth.

if you're paying six times the price, not only did they see you coming, they put on the condom as well- it's all about WHERE you deal- if i were to have to get a new set, i might take a trip to europe and pay the import fees- i ALSO MENTIONED that good glass comes out of CHEAP factories as well, or did you MISS that part? or maybe you saw LIECA, and just 'GLASSED OVER" the rest????

No I read that. Look at this rifle scopes or spotting scopes. I routinely price them to see if they have moved much, but they are always just about the top of the list in price. I have always been a Leica fan with thier old cameras, I wish their products were alittle more affordable.
