HI guys,

Never did a bedding job on my rifles but would like to do so on 2 of them.

Anyone knows how to proceed -- step by step -- kinda explanation ... or know a site where it is well explained, maybe with pictures?

It might look simple for the experienced "gunsmith" but I figured that many of us would benefit to know how to do it.

What to do and NOT to do, what compound and products used, how to protect the action, and little steps that could make a big difference. :)

I know the basics of the procedures but would like more details...so what's your techniques?

Thanks

PaulT

Hi Paul, have you thought about free floating it? Gunco charges 25 bucks to do it. If you plan on doing it on your 7mm., forget what I said, you can't really do it on syn. stock.

What have I as well as many others been doing to all these synthetic stocks for so many years now?

Hi Alex,

Long time since we heard from you...:) .

No, it's not for my 7MM but for my Savage .308. The barrel is already free floating but I want to bed the action.

I might give him a call anyways to know his price but it's something I would like to try by myself first.
Just need as much info I can get before starting the job.

When finish, the rifle will look completely different from when you came at my place because I am going to camo paint the stock and might also paint barrel and scope.... should keep my busy for the the next couple of weeks ..:)

Thanks

Hmmm. I always thought free floating a bbl. meant removing wood from the stock between it and the Bbl. Can this be done with a syn. stock?

Out of curiousity; what will a beded action add to a gut that has a free floating Bbl.? I always thought both did the same thing: eliminate vibrations/pressure points on the Bbl.

Good to hear from you can't wait to go shoot that big 45-70!!!! Hey BTW what was wrong with Lionheart? ;-)

Free floating means just that.. the barrel is free floating - it does not touch anything except where it is screwed into the action. It does not matter what the stock is made of......

Hi

When bedding, why does the recoil lug needs clearance on both sides, front and bottom? Thought the whole thing would be sitting in the compound to keep it tight...

Thanks

Accuracy wise it is better to have slight clearance on the front, sides and bottom of the lug.

If you have no clearance trying to get the lug back in place will be a problem. It can shave a bit of compound and that will end up under the lug preventing the action from seating properly.

You also want clearance between the screws and the screw holes in the stock.

To leave you some wiggle room when you want to take it apart. The rear of the lug is where you want your tight contact.
