Don't forget to consider the Grand Power K-100. It's earned excellent reviews from several of the experienced shooters here and is widely regarded as being a $1,000 class pistol available new for $595.
Slavex is right: use the boards to find out what works reliably and is well built, then go with what you think will fit you best. If you haven't already done so, spend an evening or two at the range you intend to join even though you don't own any handguns and watch/listen to the other folks there. An added benefit is many will let you give their gun(s) a try after chatting with you awhile. This can be a big advantage when choosing something that fits.
Last but not least: pick a dealer/gunsmith who will (within reason) allow you to reconsider and choose a different pistol. This can save a lot of heartache if that thousand dollar gun (after taxes, etc.) just doesn't do it for you.
Hope this helps,
- Peter
