Sterling Cross, Black Goose 2 3/4” slugs

Just picked up a box of Back goose 1 1/8oz. slugs to try out, has anyone tried them out and had good results with them? They seem like a harder cast lead slug which is nice, I’m generally shooting 2 3/4” magnum challengers but haven’t seen any on the shelves locally and figured I’d give them a whirl. I like that they’re a Canadian made slug, looks like they have a #7.5 target load offering as well.

Bought them at my LGS, they were $24 for a box of 25 slugs.

Never heard of them, but apparently Sterling Cross is based only a short drive from me, I'll have to check them out sometime.

What style of slug are they?

The look like a regular foster slug from the look of them but they are as hard as a challenger slug, I can’t easily scrape lead off with my fingernails like the S&B or Winchester foster slugs. Interested to see how they perform, the guy at the lgs that showed them to me says he shots them regularly and they are a stout load. So we’ll see I guess, I’m not able to find challengers locally at the moment and I don’t want to deplete the stash I have right now, they shoot well in a couple of my shotguns.

Sounds promising, I like Challenger ammo, but if his stuff is any good I'd rather support a B.C. company over a Quebec one.

The last combat shogun competition I did they had to change the course of fire so it had more paper and less steel cos the Black Goose slugs were hitting the steel plates 50 yards away and coming back into the crowd.

I suspect I picked up some from the same place as you.....

Agreed, have to see if the sell direct to the public. If it shoots well I’ll pick up a case if they sell direct next time I’m down that way for a work trip.

Challengers are higher velocity by a 50fps, 1610fps vs 1560fps of the black goose. Both are 2 3/4”, 1 1/8. The black goose are a touch softer but not by much, they are both hard to scrape lead off with your nail.

Your asking the guy that’s still shooting some old imperial shells, now that’s high brass. I’ll google them up if they shooter well, fingers crossed they’re good. Would be nice to have an easily to find slug like these I can buy in bulk.

The brass does look a bit high. Remington's managed recoil slugs (and I think buck) have higher brass like that. Maybe they're buying their hulls from the same supplier?

It’s higher brass than the challengers but not as high as the old Imperial magnum loads I’m shooting periodically, if I make it up to the range tomorrow to put up a couple signs and I’ll shoot some and see how they are.
