Hello all:

From a previous thread I got the impression that the only difference between the full auto L2A2 SMG and the semi auto Mk4 Police carbine was the trigger pack. Ie both used and fired from the same open bolt. However I have JUST come across the photo below on a web site which shows parts indicating that the semi auto Mk4 Police carbine fires from a closed bolt.

So now here is the question. Is there 1 sterling semi auto MK4 police carbine which fires from a close bolt or is there 2 (or more) versions of the MK4 police carbines, one firing from a closed bolt and the another from an open bolt?

Also what is the difference between the MK4 and the Mk5 police carbine?

A Sterling Police Carbine is not the same firearm as the various commercial versions designed for US sale.

Sterling

The Police carbine I had a few years back was identical to the Full Auto model except the trigger group. I compared it to my friends full-auto Sterling and that was the only difference.

So the Commerical Police carbines for the US fired from a closed bolt and the other Police carbines fired from an open bolt?

Yes. And the closed bolt versions were all prohibited in Bill C17 (by Mulroney and Kim Campbell)...go figure. Someone picked them all out of a magazine, that looks scary/horrific, ban them!

Ok, the semi only trigger pack for the MK4 (non US) Police Carbine. Was it special trigger pack or a modifed selective fire tirgger pack?

It's a special trigger pack, just like the Mk 6 & 8 closed bolt trigger packs. They are based on but not compatable with the selective trigger packs.

The receiver would have to be modified on a Police Carbine to accept a selective trigger group.

More dumb questions. Does anyone know if the trigger pack pictured at the beginning of this thread is the correct one for an open bolt Police carbine?

Also does anyone know the FRT numbers for this thing?

Looking at the first post, you seem to be confusing the factory and the military nominclatures of the Sterling pistol calibre carbines.

L2A1 thru L2A3 is the British military Nominclature for the
Mk2 thru Mk4 factory designations

The British military "L34A1" silenced SMG was known by the factory as the "Sterling-Pachett Mk5".

The Police Carbines were based on the open bolt L2A3 or Mk4 SMG receiver. A few early P.C.s were L2A2 or MkIII based guns. Similarly a few "rare" commercial Mk5 Sterlings were built as "Police Carbines" (apparently mostly sold to actual police forces).

When the US BATF changed the definition of acceptable semi-auto, Sterling developed a closed bolt version of the Mk4 "Police Carbine" (ie. Mk6 IIRC). They also received some orders for some Mk5 closed bolt semi-autos (ie. Mk8 IIRC).

Looking at the picture: The little tail sticking up on the back end? That is to engage the separate striker assembly used in the closed bolt Mk6 or Mk 8 Sterlings.
