I recently acquired one of these for a song, but I realize that the caliber seats the gun into the "never be able to shoot it" category. If I were to make a new breechblock out of 4140/17-4/"tool steel", what could I turn this into to make it actually useful and safely shootable? The buttplate is broken, but otherwise, it seems to be in pretty good shape.

Convert it to .32 S&W Long; no need to make a new breechblock for her, simply convert the existing breechblock to centre-fire & re-chamber the barrel [a .30 calibre throating reamer works wonderfully].

I've got one with 2 barrels, a .32 S&W [the short version as that barrel was originally in .32 Short RF] and one in .32 S&W Long [that barrel was originally a .32 Long RF].

I had initially toyed with the idea of .32 Long Colt, which chamber is EXACTLY the same as Stevens' .32 Long RF, as that would only entail converting the breechblock to CF, BUT try to find new .32 Long Colt brass or dies nowadays, whereas .32 S&W brass & dies are readily available.

Have one lined to 22 RF and one in 25 RF plus a 32 RF Remington I have 32 CF brass and one idea is to drill it out and use nail gun power cartridges. In no hurry at the moment .

Yes the fire pin would have to be relocated for 32 colt, which is a drop in for the barrel and chamber( shells that is..). 32 stevens is still available..I just sold 3 boxes of it..it's expensive..but available. 32 colt is a little easier to get...but is also expensive..not anything like 32 rimfire...but you'll pay $75.00 -100.00 for a newer box of 50.
It's too bad , these old single shoot where great little rifles...I still have some in the marksman model. 32cal,25cal, and one rechambered in 22 K Hornet. I use the 32 cal rimfire barrel on my 22 K Hornet reciver..and I can shot 32 Colt...
Cheers

I had 8 cases when I changed mine over. Next weekend at the Waverly gunshow I found 50 cases non fired in a Winchester yellow and red box so they sat somewhere for a few years. I paid $10 for them. About 3 evenings later I was sitting at a friends letting him I converted the rifle to 32 Colt. He remembered that he had a box of 32 long Colt. I have been picking it up everytime I see some. I believe I have over 200 cases. Check the gunshows.
