I was looking to get into acquiring and shooting a .223 because of it's accuracy, speed and ammunition costs (affordable). Has anyone looked into the Stevens 200 as it is entry priced and is made on the Savage action which is known for accuracy. I'll be shooting at 250-285 yards which is my range limit now but want something that can get me started on long-range shooting. Cheers.

No personal experience, but search the forums. I was just shopping for a .223 and the stevens seems to be highly recommended by most folks, as an economical option for a very good rifle.

(btw I decided on a savage 12fvss, love it)

Get it...shoot it until your abilites surpass it then put a new SSS or RB trigger on and rebarrel with one of the many after market drop in savage bbls. Add a new stock and you will be shooting a very sweet long range rig on a tight budget. Under 1000$ even after upgrades and including the intial purchase of the stevens.

Stevens .223 300$
Shilen, Pacnor bbl etc 300$
SSS or RB trigger 80-150$
Stock 100-300$
Nice thing is ANYONE can rebarrel one of these themselves so you save smithing fees.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Advice? Well, if you have plans on upgrading the rifle at some point why not buy a 12FV to begin with and be done with it? You'll no doubt save money doing so. Why spend yet more money on an aftermarket trigger and barrel when the FV will do what you want right out of the box?

I bought a Stevens 200 in .308 when it first came out. I really liked the rifle nice and light comfortable. Draw backs was a wandering zero, this was found after many different hand loads and 2 scope changes. Not sure what it would be like in 223. The other draw back is a heavy trigger pull which can throw things off.

Did you bed the action?

Yes I bedded the action and made no difference, which is surprising as I bed most all my rifles and find a mark difference in accuracy. What I did was traded the gun on a 700 Rem SPS with a detachable mag in 308win. I had to bed that rifle and give it a trigger job to get it in the ball park. If you look close at the Rem SPS stock it requires alot of bedding material in the recoil lug area. Not very impressive out the box. My Stevens 200 may have been the bad one out the bunch. Though look at how reasonable the price is on the Stevens!!!
