Just bought one of these rifles and am heading out on a whitetail hunt on Sat and was wondering what factory ammo I should try? Been thinking of Federal Fusion 165gr. Any comments?

PS : will also be used on an upcoming elk hunt in Nov

under 250 yds, Super-X 180 gr. Silvertips, over that, failsafe 165 gr, or federal 165 gr TSX/Accubonds.

Unless you have lots of time to practice with it, I wouldn't take any gun hunting after just getting it. Stick with what you know for now.

My 308 - which has the same barrel and 1 in 10 twist - seems quite picky about loads. Granted, I think it's blasphemy to shoot factory-loaded ammo, so I haven't shot much of it. The white-box 150 PSP's I did try grouped reasonably well, and I didn't bother trying any other factory ammo.

Not like it really matters. Any factory ammo should be sufficient - an elk is a big target. Even 4" groups would be sufficient for typical ranges that such game is taken at

I haven't tooled up yet to handload, hence the need to use factory. I was thinking the 165gr would be a good compromise for both hunts. I will be doing a more indepth load development later though.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the fusion 165's for whitetail, fusion ammo has a good reputation for accuracy and good terminal performance on deer size game.

I plan on using the 130's out of my 270 this year.

IMHO the 30-06 and the 180gr weight go hand-in-hand
^^ What he said!!

Pick a 180 that shoots well in your rifle and go for it. I wonder how we ever shot all that game before premium bullets.

When I did shoot factory ammo, the Fed grey box Classic shot really well for me.

Had some Win grey box from Wallyland to test in a 308 and that shot well too.

In a 30-06, 165 to 180 gr will do for whatever gets infront of your scope. I shot the 165gr exclusively as I don't like the extra recoil and see no real advantage for my style of hunting.

I ended up getting Federal Power Shok with the 180gr Grand Slam bullet. Should come in handy for the elk hunt later this year. Getting excited now as this will be my first whitetail hunt :dancingbanana:

Good choice, I shoot power-shok 180gr in both my .308 and .300WM with great accuracy and devastating results on whitetails :) You don't need a premium bullet to knockdown a deer ;) , although modern marketing says you do.

Good Luck
