I am thinking of purchasing a stevens 200 as my first hunting rifle, I was going for a 30-6 but the guy I was buying it from at the store is trying to get me into a stevens 200.

What are you thoughts on this rifle??

The Stevens 200 are a low end Savage. No Frills. They are available in a variety of calibers. They are a nice shooting rifle for the price. Pretty accurate riffles. First decide what you want to hunt, find a suitable caliber, and then pick the gun.
WWS price is $339

Hey blake, A stevens 200 is a brand, a 30-06 is a cartridge.
White tail deer isn't big game, it's medium game and Yes, a 30-06 will kill it. A 30-06 will kill anything in north america assuming you, the shooter, do your job behind the trigger. If you meet the sasquatch on the trail, you can kill him, be sure to take pictures of the kill before you eat him.

30-06 is also about the most a newbie shooter (who is a man in decent physical condition) can handle. You still may develop a flinch though, it's certainly no pussycat. If so, do dry firing or use an airgun until the flinch goes away.

You can have a Stevens 200 in .30-06. Put a good recoil pad on it though. 6.5 pounds is light for a .30-06. Posting on the 'Greeting and Introduction' forum won't get you the most info either.

Here is a really good deal on a great starter rifle... Remington 710 available in 30-06

These are accurate and relaible and also include a detatchable magazine rather than the "blind" magazine of the Stevens... $400 for a new rifle with a scope is an excellent price in my books.

The only thing I don't like about it is the barrel is pressed into the reciever, This isn't as bad as it sounds becasue the bolt locks into the barrel not the reciever, making it very strong. Still this gun should last a few thousand rounds and you will likely not shoot that much.

No question the Stevens is a great gun for the money and more than good enough quality for almost any hunting situation.
Its light for heavy calibres but you can add weight to the hollow stock.
A 270 will definitely work for deer and for most other game as well. Recoil is acceptable.

I own and shoot a stevens 200 in 223. I have had no issues with it and have been happy with it. I have not shot what I would call alot out of it, but enough to say it is a decent gun.
I have shot 30-06's in the past as have many everywhere it is very respected caliber and more than capable for a hunting rifle.

I would however suggest looking at the 308 it is a bit less punchy than a 06 but has PLENTY of power for your needs (whitetail), with less recoil which is good for accuracy...

Pick whatever you want for caliber, the rifle will do nicely for a first gun. After you can always upgrade to an expensive gun with marginal improvments over this one.....

errrrr. It's already been explained to you about the brand vs the calibre. Hey for what it's worth and if you want a rifle that isn't going to pound your shoulder and cause you to flinch........but still be a performer on whitetails I'd look at a Stevens 200 in the .243 or a 7mm08. Yes Stevens 200's are light rifles and one in a 30.06 will be challenging for you as a "first hunting rifle". If you just want to hunt deer (nothing larger) a .243 will do and a 7mm08 with substantially reduced recoil over a 30.06, is good for moose with the right loads.

Dont get a remington 710 or 770 package deal they are JUNK and you will regret it. Save up a few more pennies, look at the new marlin XL7 ~$400, or the stevens 200 ~$350, or a used ruger, remington or savage ($400 ish) and spend $200-$300 and buy a bushnell elite 3200 or vortex diamondback or leupold vx-I scope. Try to find a good used one, save some money and tax!!! 30-06 is a great calibre, most game in north america has been taken by that cartridge. Dont cheap out on your optics, you will regret it 100%, atleast $200 should be spent, after all whats the point of having a rifle to shoot a bullet, if you cant see what your shooting at, or it doesnt keep the same point of impact.

Is it going to be enough for big game?. like white tail??

Is a 30-06 enough for deer? Thats let asking, "does a fat baby poop?" I've herd that their's no bad/dumb question before , but thats up there.
My 2 cents would be a .308 (thats a calibre) in a Stevens 200 or Savage, and yes it's plenty gun for hunting anything in North America.
