Hi everyone.

I have a Stevens 200 in 7MM-08 and since I also have a Vanguard 7MM-08, I was considering having my Stevens 200 converted to either a 358win or maybe a 338 Federal.

What would be involved and would it be difficult/expensive to have done?
Is a savage action any good for customizing?

I assume that the minimum required work would be a barrel swap, chamber reaming and headspacing. Is there anything else that I'm missing?

I don't plan on doing any of the work myself. In my experience it's more cost effective to have an expert do it correctly the first time.

Any thoughts, experiences, wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Savage actions are headspaced by way of setting their depth in the action and tightening the barrel nut. You need not further machine a savage barrel to install it in a receiver.

The face of the bolt is removeable and interchangeable, so if it needs swapping, once again, its simply a bolt on proposition.

Issues after that are overall length of action and magazine. Possibly no issue if you fire it single shot.

Wouldn't is just be a plain barrel swap? The .358 and .338 Federal are based on the .308, just like the 7-08. The magazine, boltface, etc. should be identical.

Then he's laughing. Just a matter of finding a barrel and a gunsmith with the barrel nut wrench for a savage, or even reading up on it and doing it himself. He'd need a barrel wrench, barrel nut wrench, action vice and headspacing gauges. Might be cheaper to pay someone to do it, but more fun to do it yourself, and have the ability to swap again.
