Just wanted to know if anyone has had problems with these rifles ejecting empty casings? I bought this new and it has 55 rounds through it so far. Calibre is a 22-250. It seems to work better (read half the time) with a loaded cartridge but after firing and even testing with empty casings it is very much a problem. It works properly about 1 out of every 10 rounds. I called Savage and they are sending me a new claw, spring and ball. Just doesn't make sense to me that it ejects a full cartridge well but not an empty.

Any insight into what causes this to happen would be helpfull. Thanks!

a loaded cartridge will extract better because the bullet contacting the chamber on the way out changes the angle of the case and keeps the rim under the extractor longer in the extraction cycle....an empty case will have more angle in relation to the bolt face and as a result will have less rim under the extractor...the differences aren't great but the amount of rim contacting the extractor isn't great either...

that's my theory and I'm sticking to it...:)

I have owned 2 .30-06, a .308 and a .270 in the Stevens line. None of them had any problems but i have heard of the short actions sometimes having extraction issues.

I won a 22-250 stevens that had the same problem. Contact Savage and tell them about it and they'll send you a new extractor for free. The new one works like a charm now.

I don't know about yours but the original extractor was made of what looks like copper. The replacement they sent me is made of steel.

Thanks for the replies. I called savage and they said they are shipping me a new extractor. Should be here in a week or so. I'll let you all know if it fixes the problem.

Update

Well I finally recieved the new extractor. Came with a new ball and spring as well. I can't see any difference between the new parts and the old one but it certainly works perfect now. Something must have been off just a hair maybe that made the difference. Anyways, pretty happy with Savage customer support. Exactly the kind of service you'd expect from a top notch company.

Anyone concerned should just call them and get a new one free. When you remove the old one you will see how much crud can accumulate under it and this will make you more aware of it when cleaning in the future.

No tools needed, just takes a minute to change it.

Another good plug for Savage. I broke the rear top retainer piece on my detachable mag. (clip) for my model 16. It was nearly one year old. The lady at Savage didn't even ask me for a copy of a bill of sale, she took my address and a new clip is on the way. Let's hope Canada Post is up to the task. How can you go wrong with a Savage topped with a Leupold...tell me.
