Picked up a Stevens 200 in 25-06 today and I had a couple of questions. First I don't think the stock has been painted but the Stevens I've seen before were grey or black and this one is green. Were the early models green? Second, I noticed that a few members mentioned that if going with the 25-06 then go with a 24" barrel. I assume that is to get the most speed possible. Correct?

I got one last winter and it has the gray stock. They do say that the barrel should be 24", and that is to get the velosity up. I have not put mine over the chrono yet, but will next summer when I get a chance.

Can't post pictures but I can tell you it has not been painted. I just took it apart and there is no way it has been painted. The stock is an olive green. Thanks for the replies.

I read somewhere that the new ones are coming with a green stock. Can't remember where I read it though...

Almost anything is better than that grey. I know it is supposed to be an entry level budget rifle, but i'm sure that black or green dies in the plastic are no more expensive to manufacture than grey. Hopefully the new ones are green, as i am planning on one down the road.

I took a flashlight and really went over the stock and it has been painted. Who ever did it did a great job. I bought it used and the guy at the store told me that was the original colour. Looks like black was the original colour. I really don't care either way. I think the gun is an older version as it has the adjustable trigger, not just the one screw.
This is a great forum. I would never have bought this rifle and certainly not a 25-06 if not for what I have read here. Thanks.

So when I see them at SIR or Wholesale for 300-350, they are selling below MSRP?

Being competative WSS and Sir often sell below MSRP? Prices seem to be quite different because some of the retailers have not changed their prices yet to reflect the dollar value.

E-mailed SIR just before Christmas and they said the new price is going to be 369.00 after the current stock runs out(no 243), WSS said about the same thing. Got a 243 for 309.00 at WSS Mail order and she said they had 1 left.

Not that MSRP has all that much to do with real world prices. But the last 200 I bought was $399. I'll pay a bit extra to buy from a friend rather than WSS or SIR/Cabelas.
