There seem to have been a number of posts on the stevens 200 in 223, 30-06, etc-but not a lot in the 300 or 7mmMag.
If I get one-it would be primarily for moose-with the knowlege grizzlies are around[although not targeted]
What is your experiance, and whatabout the stevens as far as recoil is concerned in these calibers?-there have been some comments on the inadequicy of the recoil pad

I can't completely answer your question,However.A while back,I was looking at Savage 11F in 300WSM.One of the 1st things I noticed was the fact that the recoil pad did'nt seem to offer alot:eek:
If the Stevens 200 is any different:confused: I can't comment,but I just recently purchased a 200 in .223,where recoil won't be of BIG concern:)
I'm sure other CGN's can provide a more issolated answer to your question;)

I picked up a Stevens in .300WM as a "back up"/knock-about rifle. On the couple of range trips I've taken it on I'd say that I'm pleasantly surprised with its accuracy (right around MOA at 200 yards - two touching and one about 1-1/2" away was my best 3-shot group with it  ).

You'll notice that the rifle is quite light and this was another source of some concern (as far as recoil goes). Still, the recoil (with Winchester factory 180 grain ammo) wasn't all that bad. So I'd say, that I'm quite happy with the package.

You will probably want to adjust the trigger to suit your needs. One of the most surprising things about the rifle is that it has a very easily adjustable trigger (plus, with the pillar bedding and synthetic stock, it's a lot of rifle for $300-350).

I have shot Why Not's Stevens in 300 win,if you were doing a whole bunch of shooting the first thing i would invest in would be a good recoil pad.His is very accurate for a 300 dollar rifle but the recoil pad is just like a piece of mudflap.Still a lot of gun for the money.

River Rat has pretty much nailed down the only real criticism I have of the Stevens 200 in 300 Win mag.

The recoil pads must be made out of recycled hockey pucks! Other than that it is a very satisfactory rifle: good trigger, very accurate, barrel doesn't metal foul at all, and doesn't look too bad with a paint job. :)

To change the recoil pad requires the removal of two screws. There is a prefit pad that is quite decent so you just swap parts. Either that or get one that can be ground to fit.

Either cartridge will dead moose just fine. Neither is what I would bring to a Grizzly fight. I love the 7RM because of its ballistics and lesser recoil.

The rifle is the same. The difference is somewhat academic.

I was looking at a Stevens in 7 RM at one of the local vendors. The clerk just wouldn't quit bad-mouthing it, should have been his easiest sale ever. Oh well lots of other stores.

I've got the Savage 111 7mm RM. It's not too bad if you're just hunting (one or two shots), but for range work, THE FACTORY RECOIL PAD SUCKS!!!!! I put on a slip on pad and can shoot it all day. I'm waiting to see what pre-fit limbsaver works. The template on the website is full of $h1TE.

I had a Stevens 200 in 7mm mag. I was happy with it and very impressed with the accuracy. I ended up selling it to another Gunnut because I ended up with two 7mm's. I did put a recoil pad on it, which made a big difference.

For the money, you can not go wrong.

Good luck.

:D

I have been considering a Stevens in .223. I really do prefer a detachable magazine. Is there a kit for this?

If not anyone know another economical .223 with detachable mag?

I really wish remington would put out the 700SPS in .308 and .223... I would have bought both by now.
