I'm looking at getting a new Stevens 200 in .223 for a precision rifle build. I'm just wondering have the newer Stevens .223's magazines switched over to center feed yet? I just don't want to get an older model that might be rendered obsolete when I get aftermarket parts. And if so, is there a way to tell if the rifle is staggered or center feed at the gun counter without taking the stock off and measuring the spacing?

Centerfeed mags feed from the center. Take a look at the mag and if the lips are a little narrower than a 223 case it is a centerfeed mag. If the CTC spacing of the action assembly screws is 4.4" then its a centerfeed action. It is possible to have a centerfeed mag in a regular short action, very unlikely but some actually were. Bring a pencil or something 4.4" long, or a tape measure. The older short actions were 4.275" ctc.

The center feed mag is also attached to the stock and not the action. FYI

The newer Stevens are center feed.

To be honest I would find a stager feed as there are more aftermarket options available now. You can't find many stocks for the center feed actions yet. I haven't found any yet, except for Stockade and they will not ship to Canada.

EDIT: I found out that Sharpshootersupply now ships laminate stocks with center feed inlet.
