I posted this here and not in the precision thread because I am far from completing my precision rig.
I decided to modify my existing stock because I had the time and no $$ to buy what i wanted. using what i had on hand and bought as little as possible I currently have $25 invested(sandpaper and bondo and wood carver(forgot name, similar to hand planer))

It took me forever to decide on style/shape/size. Here's what i have so far.

stevens 200 stock i got from a felow cgn'er, Oak (found it in under my stairs when i moved in to the house. I have no idea what it's for but i have several 3-4' lengths left) I then pulled out my mitre saw and started cutting.

So this is what the finished result would look smilar to.

I thought it looked good. good lines and a nice flat bottom. BUT THEN BONDO TIME> My 1/8" rise in front of the trigger gaurd turned into 1/2". I tried to do too much at one time.

NExt... A little sanding and some wood shaving to get ready for more bondo.

I decided the butt stock looked pretty bady. too girly if you get my point
so pulled out my chisel and off comes the high heels.;)

and then more shaving off the forearm to remove my oops.

and it needed something more...but what? maybe a pistol grip?
IMG_6805.jpg

Pistol grip looks good but feels awkward. SO now what? shaved some(LOTS) wood of the grip and then pulled out my drill. and...

The grip feels a little wierd, too bug still, i think most of the finger grooves will have to go. I've never handled a thumbhole before so i have nothing to compare to. i may end up making it a smooth grip in the end with a flared bottom.
I then got out my nail gun and put some brad nails into the thumbhole opening to creat a mesh for my bond to hold to. worked pretty good.

She needs more sanding/bondo and maybe a more uniform butt. it looks like a tear drop now. i figure it will be easier to put on an oval recoil pad so maybe a wood shim on the top to match the bottom. and color? and barrel channel. need to cut that sucker out some how. back to the mitre saw;)

I'm hoping when it's all done and looks and feels good i may get it off to be duplicated depending on the cost. I like the look of wood stocks.

Nice start and your not afraid to try things. With any luck you will have something that works well for you and you will have learned a lot. A WHOLE lot! The next project will go that much smoother and you will have a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish.

Its just great to see people jumping right into it and inspiring others. Good luck with the finishing and let us see how it turns out in the end.

so i've been procrastinating a bit. trying to decide what the heck to do. so i just started sanding and carving and sanding and carving until it felt good. but i'm still not sure on color or color design but i'll probably use auto paint with a hard clear coat.

i would have made the bottom of the butt flat (no notch) so it would sit better in sand bags...looks like a fun project. I always get the urge to make a mess of my Stevens stock when I see these posts :D

my last update until my barrel arrives. and then i'll be bedding the action and the first 3-4" of the barrel. hopefully in a couple of weeks(fingers crossed)
i went to C-Tire and found a paint color i could live with, it turns out to be engine enamel. it looks green but is supposed to be grey? i did a test on my picitanny rail, after a 2hr bake in the oven the paint is rock hard and looks sharp(too bad i can't find my pics-maybe later)
now i need to make a butt bad and i need to find out at what temp a stevens stock will melt as i need to bake the stock somehow.

you could try heat lamps or a heat gun to help cure the paint perhaps, not sure what your recommended temp or bake time is, might be nicer than having a puddle in the oven or warped stock

Very cool! Just curious, may i ask the benefit of the odd angle of the grip? I have never seen something like that before, is it just more comfortable to sit with or hold?

the recommended heat/time is 300F for 2hrs. not sure at what temp the synthetic stocks melt.

the 90 degree pistol grip? or how the pistol grip flares out at the bottom? it just feels good in my hands. i started with an oversized grip and just removed the wood from the grip until it felt right.

sorry the 90 degree grip. So it really feels okay? I'll have to try that out one day...

thanks :)
