Stevens 200 stock

Most of the criticism directed at the Stevens 200 is
[1] the sharp edges on the checkering,and
[2] the recoil pad
Can the sharp edges on the checkering be sanded ?
Can another recoil pad be retrofitted?
If I pick one of these up, it would likely be either 7mm Mag or the 300 MAG, with the intended use being strictly utilitarian-hunting moose -bear

The pad is easily replaced. The sharp checkering can be sanded down with fine paper to whatever degree of grip you want, then painted.

Here is what I did to the Stevens in 7mm I had for a while. The stock is easy to prep and paint. The recoil pad takes a little patience if you grind one down, but there are pre-fitted pads you can buy.
