Ok, So I want to get into something other then blinking and maybe some hunting as well. I also wanted a .223 so a Stevens 200 is in my price range.

I would go with the savage but then would have little to no money for glass.

I place on putting on a Variable 6x–18x (50mm) Bushnell Banner D&D .

What rings should I get and what would needs to be done to the rifle?

for rings get the burris sig zee rings with inserts. for mods
you will want to stiffen the stock fill all the little voids in the forstock with lead shot and lay epoxy over top of it* you could also just use a piece of aluminum strapping laid in top save on weight, there is quite a bit of flex in the mag well of the stock so you will want to epoxy some aluminum strapping into the sides of the well *between the pillars snugly*also float the tang and give it a good bedding job. clean the seams and paint at your first oppurtunity. if you would like to get an good visual idea of what i am talking about come by my place sometime and i will let you have a gander at mine. its in 300wm not 223. also if you need some lead shot let me know i bought 25lbs of it LOL
 
Can't go wrong with the 223 Stevens. I bought one a couple of years ago now and after a bedding job it shoots very well. Burris ring with the inserts would be a good set of rings too. I topped mine of with a cheapy 4-12x44 Banner and I'm semi-happy with it.
 
I bought one in 25-06,topped it with a leupy 4-12 and it shoots just as good as my new 112 savage topped with a leupy 6.5-20!!!.Lacks quite a bit of velocity with the 22 inch barrel but it shoots great.Get the 402 offset bases or a normal size scope will not fit if it was a long action but in 223 normal ones should be fine.Trigger should have some tuning as it is quite stiff.Savage shooters.com has some good info on tuning it.Might be info here as well.Have fun!

since i had to replace i been using weaver 2 peice bases and the scope fits fine on mine i put a tasco 6-24x40 on it

no problem just give me a shout once you get it and we will set something up, i got lots of lead shot ,epoxy, aluminum strapping, and a few pints of bondo if you decide to reshape the stock *cheek peice, forearm etc*

Stevens .223, just picked one up with a 4-12 x 40 scope and switched that out to a 8-32x44 and now the gopher looks like a bear. It's funny it seems to like 55 gr bullets . American eagle 55 gr FMJBT has given me the best results so far..
 
Stevens is considered a "precision rifle"? I thought it would have been considered a "hunting" firearm.
what are you classifying " precision" by? the scope mounted on it, or the quality of the gun itself?
 
i dont know about anyone else but i define precision rifle as being any rifle used for precision shooting. Stevens has been and is currently used for long range and precision shooting on several fronts. Stevens rifles with decent glass are just as accurate as bot hsavage and remington out of the box. they just arnt as estheticly pleaseing to the eye
 
As their are other threads about this rifle in here and I plan on using it for more then just plinking and hunting then I would say that this is the correct forum to place this in.

I can understand it being the wrong forum if for say I was doing this with an SKS.
 
na.. thats cool fremen. I was just searching for the "technical" answer to this question. I have a 1/2 minute Tikka in .300WSM with a 5X15X50, and was sure if this was considered to be a precision rifle either.
now I have a better understanding. sorry to get off topic.

A buddy sold it to me so I would have something to use for coyote hunting. It only had 5 rnds down the tube and is quite accurate. We are going to bed it soon and then try some handloads and see if the accuracy improves

Both those ideas will certainly help, but a couple of us noticed that our stevens 223's really started to tighten up the groups after about 100 rounds down the pipe. So get out and have some fun with it - call it an investment in improving the accuracy, or plinking, whichever appeals to you. ;)
