When you snap the fore end back on ease it up with your fingers. If you let it snap shut it will eventually (sometimes right now) crack the wood.

Mine had been over oiled by the previous owner. One day the wood came off when I went to pull off the front end. Obviously I was in the field and had no screwdrivers or other pieces of steel. Surprisingly stiff and hard to remove without the wood in place.

That wasn't nice? My problem was comparing it to my LC Smith which has the mechanism built into the wood, with a wheel on the outside to release, and at the same time you pull upwards on the fore end! Took me a while to realise what Darryl was saying!!

For a real challenge get a Remington Nylon 66 to take apart and put back together. Actually a Winchester 88 is a beast also.
