It is a question I've been asked quite often ; How to Tell a Stevens Model 44 from a 44 1/2 ?
Without getting into internals or being too descriptive just a quick over view.

Model 44 Ideal - 1894 to 1947
Chambered in .22 Short to 38- 55
It is a ''Tilting Block'' which pivots back & down when levered open. (same as Stevens Favorite)
The 4 receiver bolts show all the pivot points : L to R trigger , hammer , lever & breech block.
Note ; the sides and top of the block are Flat & Square.

Model 44 1/2 Ideal - 1903 to 1916
Chambered in .22 Short to .38-55 & .44- 40
This is a true ''Falling Block'' which drops straight down a channel guide when levered open
much like the Winchester 1885.
The 3 receiver bolts are pivots for trigger hammer & lever . (smallest is a locator pin)
Note ; the block top is rounded to the sides.

Always open to corrections & additions .
