I'll often buy a bunch of guns from someone that doesn't want them anymore, and of course I take them all - garbage or not. I end up with firearms that should be chopped up and recycled....but pitching 'em is always a last resort.
So now I have two Stevens 77 shotguns - a "B" and a "CD". I have unfortunately become very familiar with their assembly and disassembly. I have cleaned and lubed up both pumps but have a frustrating problem with both of them.

Once they are fired, they frequently remain locked up. I have to engage the action release to pump the action again. In the hopes that recoil would deal with the problem, i took them to the range and found the problem persists when firing.

Any wisdom out there? Internet searches only reveal others that have had similar problems, but no solutions.

Might be a problem with the Slide Lock Spring. The hammer engages this when it falls, causing the slide lock releases the slide.
Sort of a double ended hairpin looking thing. A number of Stevens shotguns use this system.

If you go to the gunpartscorp.com website, pull up the schematic, and you can find this part.

its kind of unique in that I have two of them, and one has this problem worse then the other. I've compared them side by side and worked through the entire trigger pulling operation and hammer reset, looked over schematics, watched the very few videos out there. I'm kinda confident its put together correctly from the various sources I have at my disposal.

It seems to be a frequent problem judging by the internet searches returning similar questions to mine, but no clear answers.

Very good candidates for the chop saw the epitome of junk for that time period
A accumulation of springs in the trigger mech that would always fail the action lock would not release the bolt after firing
There were a few variants the were the mechanism with a different name savage 820 Canadian sportsman and a few more that I can't recall at this time

Have a close look at the slide stop release for burrs. Might not be dropping smoothly, hanging up. Or the spring is exhausted as tiriaq points out above.
I have a 522 trapshooter which is a bit different where inertia comes into play to release the slide lock. Or if just cycling the action, the only other option is to depress the manual slide lock.
Some of the 500 series also need to have the forend slammed forward assertively for it to release. Not sure, or familiar with your 77 if it’s something similar.

Here are some images of my 522 internal workings if it’ll help.
If anything, it’s an interesting system to see.

Interesting series of photo descriptions. Maybe on a quiet winter's eve I will take the components out and line them up similarly to see exactly how it functions, and why it is malfunctioning.

Sounds like Stevens perfected the single shot pump gun. Why mess with success? Obviously once they had it perfected they stayed with it. :p

Ha ha yep my first pump gun was a savage model 79 pump . it was a single action bar that would bind up if you twisted the forearm any when you pumped it . kicked like mule lol
