Stevens Double Barrel Repair

Hello Gunsmiths,

I have a problem with a double barrel Stevens shotgun. It mis-fires.

The history is that it was my uncles. He had two of them that he had bought second hand. One had bad firing pins, but a good barrel. The first one he had worked well till a bad shell caused the barrel to explode. So, he put the good barelle on the good breach. This worked for a few years. Then it began to misfire. A gunsmith here in Edmonton says it needs a locking bolt to tighten the clearance between the barrels and breach. So, I am searching for a gunsmith with a locking bolt or other ideas to tighten the clearance between the barrels and breach.

I would really like to repair this gun. It is one of the few items I inherited from my Uncle when he passed on a few years ago. It has great meaning to me. Also, I'd like to use the gun, for hunting, as a reminder of the great times we had.

Any asisstance or suggestions would be appreciated

two suggestions
1 do a strip and clean by carefully removing butt stock often the moving parts are gummed enough that it is not fully closing.
2 Make sure the action pin is not worn this will cause the action to not lock up properly.

I don't see any visible wear. The sloppy fit is due to using a breach from one gun and a barrel from another, I think. The locale gunsmith suggested a new locking pin.....

Can't a layer of chrome plating (maybe a thick one) compensate for the wear?

Does this Stevens employ a Greener style cross-bolt? If not and it's just the hinge pin that's worn drive it out, turn it 180 degrees and drive it in again. This usually tightens sloppy actions. Even an appropriately sized brass shim in the right place will work wonders, and lasts for a loooong time.

I do not know what a Greener style cross pin is? Can you describe it? I look if I can rotate the pin. thanks for the hints.

Go to Google images and type Greener cross bolt. Beats my descriptive powers.

You can also peen the lug (underside of the barrel on the monobloc). This will displace metal creating a tighter, albeit temporary, fit.

I have a Stevens double that had a bit of slop when the action was closed and the forearm removed. I picked up a piece of stainless steel shimstock (.002") and trimmed it to size. I wrapped it around the pin....problem solved, not a bit of movement.

Follow-up on Shim

Great idea. I'll try it. Did you use glue or other means to keep the shim from falling out or unrolling?
