Stevens Favorite conversion.

I have an old .25 Stevens Favorite with a few missing parts I might try to rebuild. I was thinking to convert it over to .22 by installing a new barrel if and when I find or make the other parts. Then I thought why not go to a .22 magnum barrel? Please tell me why this won't work before I sink too much money into it.
 
It may not take the pressure. My crackshot won't take 22 LR. It bulges the cases at the rear. I am using CCI Quiets and it likes them. My problem is finding a front sight that is taller than the one I have. Hitting 16 inches too high at 50 yards.
 
OK, Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just fix it up enough to be a wall hanger, I don't think the old falling block would seal up tight enough to fire safely.
 
You might also want to post in the gunsmithing section of the ASSRA sight. There is an awful lot of single shot knowledge there, and a lot of people into the Steven's rifles there. I imagine that .22 magnum might be a bit much though.

You might be able to have a 22 LR barrel liner installed.I think it was a Stevens favorite as well.Not sure if the firing pin would line up on what you want to do thou. The machine work would likely just remove a little material from inside the existing barrel. Someone I know had a liner put in not too long ago and it was around the $200 area. He says the gun shoots great now.

This has been hashed over a few times.

The general consensus on the Favorite 'falling block' (it tilts, rather than drops) is that if it is in really good shape, stick to Standard Velocity fodder or you will rapidly spring the internal parts loose.

Try to remember that the whole of the force is retained by two unsupported screws, one on the front of the breech, one that the lever pivots upon.

The Model 44 tilting block rifle makes a better 22 than the Favorite does. Most of the centerfire Model 44's are pretty loose.

So yeah, steer clear of the Rimfire Magnum as an option. It'd get tough on the eyebrows, when the cases start to tear.
If you can find a 1 in 22 twist barrel,you could chamber it in 22 Short. The CCI quiets are nice too, for a LR sized case and chamber.

I have a Favorite rifle, someone replaced the takedown barrel with one from a Mossberg 22. Turned the breech down to slip into the frame, and drilled a dimple for the takedown screw, bingo a 22LR instead of a 25RF. Works like a charm and he has the original 25 barrel as well.
 
just got one too. kinda ruff but neat. bronells has 17 mach2 and 22 liners.......... cost prohibitive for what it is. but a nice wall hanger

Yup. Brownell's has 'em.

Try to get one here in Canada! PITA Homeland Security.

As fast and as cheap to just re-machine a donor barrel to fit. If not faster and cheaper.

It will not work as 22 mag. Too much pressure! My friend had one would not fire hot 22lr. Safely...
Best choice is still reg 22. Or .maybe 25 ACP. Check on pressures though.
