Model 24 .22/.410 with side selector - the older model.
Really nice shape, but the .22 was misfiring badly. Only the very edge of the rim was being hit by the firing pin. Almost as if the barrels weren't closing far enough to get the rim in front of the firing pin. I suspect that the rifle barrel had never worked well from new.
Puzzled over it for a while. Then decided that the easiest fix would be to install a new firing pin with a larger diameter tip. The existing tip was .080". I drilled out the firing pin hole in the frame, and made and installed a new firing pin with a tip .106" in diameter. This moved the firing pin impact at least .010 further onto the rim. No longer misfiring.

Interesting thread on a thoughtful repair.
I guess the question I have is....... do you think this was a
manufacturing issue?
Curious to know how many others are out there with this problem?

Thanks for the "how to do" tiriaq.

Thanks for posting that. I have a Stevens 22/410 (1940's or 50s) with "exactly" the same issue, including the thought it of not being completely closed (not being closed completely was suggested to me but it seems to be locked tight and no indication on the .22 or .410 brass that anything is out of order). .410 fires every time, the .22 not always and it is as you describe, just catching the edge of the rim. I'll have a look at trying that one of these days.

I just replaced a side selector on one of these a few weeks ago. Nifty 'ol gems. Thanks for sharing your issue n' fix.

Mine was giving light strikes on my first 2 test fires. That was purely my fault though (operator error) as I wasn't pulling the hammer all the way back. There is a "half ####" but it's not a safety by any means. I think it was to get the hammer off the selector. Once I pulled the hammer all the way back there have been no issues. I'm by no means implying others are as dumb as me!

Anyone else find the extractor to fit extremely poorly?
Mine actually fires well but the selector was pooched, I just repaired it IIRC.

The .22 extractors are pretty wobbly, but generally function well enough.
My personal 24 is a .22/20ga with a hammer nose selector.

Incidentally, changing the transfer bar in one of the side selector guns is a royal pain.
Western Gun Parts has repro transfer bars, if one is needed.

If I ever have to fix the selector again (history predicates future) I'll go with a hammer select.

When you suggest the extractor fits poorly...fits the gun poorly, or Doesn't extract shells well? Mine is functional, and closes up easily enough. Next time I have it out I'll look a bit closer.

Old thread I know, but figured I'd bump it for interest since I took Tiriaq's advice here and turned a new firing pin for mine as well, a couple of months ago. I've put several hundred .22's through it since, and the problem is fixed. I had to shape a chisel point on the tip too.

The area directly under the rim was badly peened from the firing pin striking that area so I had to swage the chamber back into shape and get the extractor to keep from sticking - the original firing pin only ever caught just the outer edge of the rim, so like yourself it would occasionally fire (usually if you took a couple strikes of the hammer).

Needless to say the bore is mint (it couldn't have fired much over the years).
