I bought this Stevens Mk 12 in 25 caliber with the intent of re-barreling it to 22 long rifle but then I got to thinking ..... why not 22 Magnum. Now the questions ...... Will the action be strong enough for the pressures of 22 mag. Secondly, there is a difference of .001" in the diameter of the bullet. 22 LR is .223 and 22 Mag is .224. Will that one thousandth make any significant difference in the over all operation and safety of that build. Is this a good idea or ..... am I dreaming?
Thanks

I have a Steven Marksman that has been rebarreled in 22, it wares a newer savage barrel, off a bolt gun. I also have a 22 mag Steven Favorite , but it's a Model 30...newer Favorite from the 1990's...a remake of the older model, shoots great. The 22 mag Favorite, model 30 sells for $300-325.00 on the EE, and I think there is one on there right know! lol
These guns are old...the marksman model I would say would be stronger than a Favorite action, but I like my face...so no i wouldn't do 22 mag. If I had an extra 22 mag model 30, I'd trade you for the 25 cal, just to keep in my small collection. pm me if your interested in something different, before you start cutting ...lol

Thank you for the reply. I think I will stick with my original plan of just going with 22 LR. My face is getting old so I sort of liking the way it is too. I have a barrel of a can't remember the make but it is the same as a Cooey 64 I think. I also am working on an early Stevens Crack shot rolling block. I think that one will be 22 short only because the action does not appear to be very robust.

Not a lot of work to do the new barrel, put it in a lathe and turn it down to fit the take down socket, and cut the extractor slot on the bottom. I would think the 25 cal extractor could be filed down a little to work. The one I bought was already done , when I got it. Works great, nice little carry 22.
I have a Crackshot in 32 cal, and yes they would be , what I would call ...the base model/type Stevens of the day. It shoot well, but not ready used much..doesn't fit into the collection very well...only have the one.

The Crackshot that I have is 32 cal as well. I am still tinkering with it. If I could get access to a lathe, I would probably have it done fairly quick. Maybe I need to put a lathe on my shopping list.

I'd suggest you go even farther than limiting it to .22LR and only use SV or slower ammo. I've seen a lot of warnings about not using these older boy's rifles with HV ammo due to the sharper kick to the high speed stuff. There wasn't anything like our HV ammo back when these were sold. So for the sake of the action staying together it would be wise to stick with the modern stuff that behaves more like the stuff of that time does.
