The cheapest, and perhaps the best, reinforcing rods for stiffening a fore end are broken graphite or fibreglass fishing rods.

There are lots of them, available everywhere, in many different diameters, easy to cut to the required length, and free!

I, beam curtain rods work well to, also canadian tire has marine tex epoxy that i used on my choate stock , its sandable and holds the camofussion paints well,
