Hi guys, I'm super excited today as i just received my firearms license in the mail...I'm planning on purchasing my first handgun and have decided to go with a steyr. here's my question... I have never fired a handgun before, so i dont know what the recoil is like. I am leaning towards the steyr m9 (9 mm - yes i am aware of the ejector issues), but i am open to the .40 as well. My girlfriend and children also want to get into shooting as well. Could a 13 year old boy be able to handle the recoil from a .40s&w, or should i definately be going with the 9mm? Thanks in advance for your input. Would love to hear from some people who own a steyr as well
cheers

I have shot the styer 9mm and while the low bore axis really makes it a soft shooter, I see no reason to go with a .40. 9mm is cheaper and easier to shoot well. Some shooting sports require .40 to make a certain power level but that just means you end up with both.

I'd go 9mm. Cheaper to shoot as far as ammo.
I got ride of my .40 pistols and stuck to 9mm and a few .45 :)

You might want to check out the S&W M&P 9mm as well. Easier to find and more accessories. Great shooter for a great Price. You can find the range kit version for as low as $650.

I love my Steyr M40-A1, very nice to shoot. As mentioned above, with the low bore axis the recoil comes straight back with very minimum muzzle rise.
I believe with the first gen, there were some issues with FTE. I have 300 rds through my mine so far with zero problems.
The ammo cost between the 9mm and the .40 is $2 its not too bad.

The Steyr M9A1 was my first pistol a year ago - I love it and can't part with it. It is my best handling gun because of it's medium frame, low muzzle flip, and excellent point-ability. Not the most accurate but that's probably more to do with striker fire action than gun itself. The short barrel and sight radius add to shooting accurately too.

I just shot it for the first time in IDPA match today and I did better than expected with accuracy. I simply love the handling and reliability, however I wish there was better aftermarket support for the Steyrs.

Oh, to answer your question, 9mm is cheaper unless you plan to reload. I have shot various guns (XD, M&P, and Glocks) in 9 and 40 and I can't tell the difference. Some people say the 40 SW is more of a snappy recoil, but I dunno if that applies to the Steyr M.

And you can actually buy mags and parts for the M&P.

I really like the Steyer too. If I could have found one I would have bought one. I like them a lot.

I like different things tho. I don't drive a minivan/SUV for example. I sail, I shoot, I like cats.

if you can handle not being able to buy tons of parts for your pistol, and you want something quality for cheap, I say go for it.

Oh and 9mm is cheaper, easier to shoot and can be had anywhere that pistol ammo is availiable. Yes .40Smith might be better for self defence, but we can't use it for that here anyways. But its harder to find and more expensive. properly loaded 9mm ammo is plenty for IDPA/IPSC so you can use it for that. And, in real life, if you ever have to defend yourself, it will work just fine, if you can shoot.
