noticed a american company making a rifle that is a modified steyr aug with a AR bolt, bolt hold open and a foward assist all wich the original aug dosnt have to the best of my knowledge. i know that the steyr aug is prohib, but at what point in time is a rifle no longer considered a variant? i mean other then looking like a aug this thing cant really even be considered anything like the steyr aug that is prohib now. well at least in my books anyways. anyone care to comment?

Prohib as a variant - the manufacturer advertized it as an "enhanced version" at one point. What makes a rifle a variant (at this point in time) is whatever Mr. Smith says makes it a variant, hence a blowback 22 rimfire can be a variant of the closed bolt MP5.
