Does anyone have the new Steyr HS 50? If so, what loads have you worked up for it, and how well does it shoot? What are your overall impressions of the gun? What optics did you choose?

Jasonsmack has one and I've seen it in person. 2-stage trigger...very nice :) He's got a Nightforce on it. That's all I'm gonna say though, I'll let him fill you in on the rest.

please respond

Hey Jasonsmack if you could share any information with me about your 50 it would be much appreciated.

I am surprised there arn't more responces to this post??

Sorry I am so late getting in on this one. Been away for a few days and just got back.

I am just now getting into reloading my own ammo. I have been using the very expensive HSM (Hunting Shack) ammo with the moly-coated 750 grain Amax bullets for about half the shooting and re-primered military surplus ammo for the rest. All the ammo I have been shooting works well in the gun but I am sure the HSM ammo is far superior to the military stuff. I plan on using the HSM ammo as an example for me to start with one I get rolling on reloading my own. I just built my own depriming tool so I can clean the brass with the primers out and resize without pushing primers at the same time. I just have to pick up some primers and I am ready. I still have some ammo so I have not had a real push on to start reloading yet.

In my opinion the gun is far superior to my abilities and experience with long range shooting. I get a little shell-shocked from firing the gun and sometimes flinch from it. Anybody that has been around one of these or an Armalite 50 knows what I mean. I have got to the point with it now that I am fairly confident on hitting a 2' target at half a kilometer. I still have lots to learn about my scope and this is likely the most restricting factor in my long range accuracy. The Nightforce scope is a great unit but I just have not taken the time to really educate myself on its proper function. My model of scope is the NXS 8-32 power with the NP-1RR reticle. I chose that reticle because I plan on doing some long range varmint hunting with the gun. I imagine that a mil-dot reticle would work as well or better with a somebody that knows how to use one.

The gun has about 130 rounds down the barrel now and has functioned perfectly. I would like to lighten up the second stage on the trigger eventually but it is not a big priority yet.

With any luck and cooperation of weather I will be taking it out for coyotes in the next few days.

Any other questions just ask.

Merry Christmas everybody.

I thought the HS 50 would be a bit better. I fired a supressed 50 bullpup and evrey time I puled the trigger I wokeup with the rifle beside me, 3rds from that one and a two hour headake. Felt like I took a steel toe to the head.

Jasonmack, I noted at the 50 cal shoot we hosted last year that the concussion from both the Streyrs and AR50s was very abusive, to those standing near. Not being offered an opporunity to shoot 1 had no idea that the blast and recoil was hard on the shooter as well. I had been interested in reverse engineering the Steyr type brake, as an option on my rifles, but may rethink it now. I use a Holland type brake on the rifles I build and find them very pleasant to shoot. I shot my deer this year with my 50 and in the excitement none of us remembered ear plugs, none of us really noticed this until after the gutting was done, the noise was far less than a standard caliber rifle without a brake.
I can attest to the fact that the 750 Gr Amax is definiately a POOR bullet for hunting with. The bullet literally came apart like a grenade inside the chest cavity, the destruction is indescribeable. but NO exit wound.
The 750 Gr Wildcats did far less damage, I am planning to use an 800 Gr BTSP next year. Can't wait!!

Rick - next time any of us 50 cal shooters get together please feel free to try the gun out. I was a little shy at the shoot last summer. I should have stepped up and offered my gun but it looked like you guys were having a blast letting people shoot your rifles. I have no problem letting people try the gun out and if some poeple do not like the way it feels or shoots I do not take offence to it. If it helps people to decide to buy a 50 cal of any shape or brand it is all the better for the 50 caliber community.

Jason Thanks for the offer, It is nice to see what other rifles of the same caliber are like to shoot as they all have slightly different characteristics.
The basic idea of the shoot was to try to get more people hooked in the 50 cal sport, the thinking being more people will scream louder than a few if the feds get to thinking again. I could not agree with you more the bigger the 50 cal community gets the better for all of us. We did not really explain to the shooters that came , that we were hoping to have a combined effort to help explain to the crowd about the different rifles and what the experiences of those with them had.
Ben and I have been talking a little already about " 50 cal shoot part deux" so hope to see you there again. This years shoot was a learning experience for us, with luck we will get more guys like you that have guns to come and help support the faction. Next years shoot should be better as we learned alot from it, maybe the damn bugs will be smaller and fewer next year as well

Jason, Where are you getting your HSM 50 cal ammunition? Are you able to order it by mail or are you driving across the boarder to get it. Also what sort of cleaning procedures have you been using on the HS 50. I have the same rifle with about 10 rounds through it now.

Actually the first HSM ammo I had a relative bring it up for me. He used to live in Montana but he has now moved east to Maryland. I think he ordered it direct from HSM. I brought a couple more boxes up myself I bought in Cabelas after my cousin got the first stuff across. HSM is on Canadas approved list for importing but you are not supposed to export it from the USA due to the 50cal export ban so I quit doing it and am slowly collecting my reloading supplies.

My initial cleaning was simply pulling patches with solvent on them through the barrel. I cleaned the gun every shot for the first 10 rounds and then every second for ten then about twice more. The first day out I shot 28 rounds and cleaned the barrel 17 times. I allways pulled the patch from the breech to the muzzle. I have a boresnake too and pulled it through a few times that day too but did not use solvent. I think the boresnakes probably work OK but I have got to the point where I like to see what is coming out of the barrel when I clean it. The green boresnake is tough to see anything on and a good old white patch shows everything. I really prefer to pull patches in the same direction of the bullet. I wish the Steyr's bolt came out of the gun a little easier so I could use a push jag with a patch through from the breech. I suppose there are enough bullets down the barrel now it would not matter as much if I started pushing them through from the muzzle end.

Anything else just ask.
