STEYR M9-A1, C9-A1, AND S9-A1 PISTOL SAFETY WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE

Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - Steyr Arms Management

STEYR M9-A1, C9-A1, AND S9-A1 PISTOL

SAFETY WARNING AND RECALL NOTICE

Steyr Arms, Inc. has determined a potential condition with the firing pins in a very limited number of 9mm Steyr M9-A1, C9-A1 and S9-A1 pistols that could possibly allow the pistol to fire without the trigger being pulled. Although Steyr Arms, Inc. has not received any reports of accidents or injuries, it is voluntarily initiating this recall to protect the safety of its customers because of the remote possibility of an unintentional discharge occurring.

The affected M9-A1 pistols bear serial numbers 3021926-3021928, 3021932-3021935, 3021946-3021955, 3021966-3021988, 3021990-3021993, 3021995-3022001, 3022003-3022005, 3024663-3024672, 3024683-3024688, 3024690-3024702, 3024704-4024712, 3024733-3024738, 3024741-3024742, 3024802-3024811, 3024852-3024871, 3024882-3024901, 3025299-3025308, 3025311, 3025313-3025333, 3025335-3025338, and 3025353-3025359.

The affected S9-A1 pistols bear serial numbers 3022929-3022931, 3022933, 3022935-3022937, 3022975-3022977, 3022988-3022991, 3022993, 3022995-3022996, 3024146-3024175 and 3024354.

Only the M9-A1, C9-A1 and S9-A1 pistols with the serial numbers identified above are affected by this recall. If your pistol has a different serial number, it is not subject to the recall.

If you own a Steyr M9-A1, C9-A1 or S9-A1 pistol with a serial number identified as being affected by this recall, please do not load or fire your Steyr M9-A1, C9-A1 or S9-A1 pistol and contact us immediately to arrange to have the firing pin in your pistol replaced, free of charge, using the following steps:

Was considering a Steyr.

If you haven't shot one, I would highly recommend it. They are an excellent pistol. If you like Glocks, it could be up your alley. I personally like mine better as I am sure many other Steyr owners would attest. They have a great trigger for a striker fired gun, robust all steel subframe, trapezoidal sights and a very low bore axis. It seems to me like Steyr is making every effort to look after their customers. The only downside that I see to the platform is a narrow mag-well and limited aftermarket support.

I would pick up an M45-A1 in a heart beat!
If they'd exist, that is......funny thing is that they can be had for as low as 399 down south!

Steyr serials are normally 5 to 6 digits long .

These seem to be made in the future.

What they are talking about are the new, post-2010, guns that are available in the U.S. market.

What we have here is Canada are the 2005-2008 produced guns... many of which are still "new old stock" still sitting at the dealers. If the gun has "O" as the middle letter in its 3-digit date code, then it was made in 2000's. If it is an M series pistol in N. America, it was made no later than 2008. The 2010 and 2011 produced S, C, and M pistols will have "W" as the middle letter in the three digit date code.

There is a picture of a C9-A1 on the cover of the current G&A "Handguns" magazine. The serial number of that gun is 3022146, which is similar to the serial numbers in the recall.

The old (2005-2008) M-series pistols have a different serial number range. If your pistol looks like my old one (below), with no roll-pin under the rear sight, and an "O" date code (in this case "LOH", "Feb. 2006") it is not one of the redesigned pistols that was re-introduced to the U.S. market in 2010 (and therefore potentially subject to the recall)

I am a huge Steyr fan (I currently have 3 Steyr rifles, and I previously had another one, and an M pistol and a GB pistol), but theunfortunate thing for Steyr is that the M-A1 pistols (like the ones that were imported to Canada) are duds (see my other posts on this point if you want my reasons for saying this), and now - since redesigning the trigger and extractor and reintroducing them - now they have an embarassing recall on their hands. They can't seem to get these pistols right. Maybe they should go back to the GB (yah, right. Like that will happen) or start from scratch.

Dont know why we can't seem to buy the new ones up here in Canada. You are right about the "New/Old" stock. I purchased mine 4 moths ago brand new from a reputable forum sponsoring dealer and when i got it i was shocked to realize that its Date coded 2007.

I belive it is due to the barrel length issue. Right now Steyr is making pistols with two barrel lengths: 3.6 inch (S and C pistols), and 4 inch (M pistols). In order to be able to import any of these to Canada, they will have to make them with barrels longer than 105mm (about 4.17 inch or 106mm). They have done this a few times (with M's, never with S's, and C's are brand new), but apparantly not with the redesigned pistols. I expect they will try and sell some to Canada at some point, but since there is no Canadian Steyr distributor... I doubt there is anyone working on this issue. There are just a few older pistols kicking around, still in the dealers showcase.

I would like to check out a new one, but I think I will wait until they get this recall issue sorted out.

Steyr Recall

From the number listed, it does not appear to be a huge quantity of pistols for this recall.

It is not likely anybody in Canada is affected.

While unfortunate for the Steyr marketing image to have this bad luck (especially during a comeback) I give credit to Steyr for acting on this matter quickly.

Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have had something slip by and were forced to do a recall. Happens all the time.....

I still feel the Steyr M Series is a well designed pistol.

Cheers !

Just Counted ............. Only 314 pistols on the list

To me the Steyr is the best feeling most natural pointing plastic on the market. Really wish the would get us some newer versions up here. If there is no Canadian distributor for Steyr I'm wondering who is Wanstalls getting the stockpile of older versions from ?

Good Point Ballox.

Maybe Wanstalls would like to pick up this ball and run with it!

Cheers,
