The Germans placed the sling mount positions on the right side of the STG 44 rifle. I've looked at different photos from the War but I don't see the reason for why they put it there. Anyone able to enlighten me?

The arming handle is on the left side.

If the sling were on the same side, that small bit sticking out a couple of centimeters would cause all sorts of discomfort while the rifle is being carried. Not only that, it would get caught on every bit of webbing every time it was not supposed to.

That, plus the rifle has the selector and mag release (nothing ambi back then) free of any sling getting in the way plus the "comfort" of the rifle laying flat on the body when slung. With cocking handle/selector and mag release on the left side it makes me wonder if the Germans trained to use it right shouldered and shall leave for others to clarify.

The MP40 and MP38 had their cocking features on the left as well.

I always found that very handy. Being right handed, It's very easy to do a mag swap with the left hand, with a bit of practice of course and #### the smg even with the empty mag in hand.

I always wondered why this didn't catch on with other manufacturers.
