I'm planning to pick up a STI 1911 in 9mm (either Spartan or Trojan, to be determined), however someone mentioned to me that you should get it in 40 s&w instead so you could shoot both calibers with minor modification.

I know that some other pistols (ex. Glock and others) it's possible to do so, but never heard of 1911's that can. I did research on the internet and found a few sources with people able to convert their 2011's by swapping the uppers, but nothing for 1911's.

- Has anybody tried doing this for a 1911 successfully?
- If so, what parts were swapped out? Barrel only? Swapped the entire slide?
- Did you use the same magazines - 40 s&w?

Thanks in advance.

whatever applied to the top of a 2011 will apply to the top of a 1911 (they are the same)

its a different size breach face so you need a whole new top end and the ejector will need to be tuned to work with both slides

Hmmm...maybe I will go with the 40 s&w instead. I could always go down to a 9mm later down the road, if I wanted to. It's good to have options. I assume it can't be done the other way around. Thanks.

it can be done, just need to change the barrel, firing pin, ejector and extractor - is it worth it given the cost and effort vs another gun? you be the judge

its just a top end, you can do it either starting with a 9mm or a .40 and going to the other.
