What is the typical life span of an STI open gun? What tends to fail and after how many rounds? (I know this will vary widely) How many of you open shooters have a backup gun? I'm sure there is a wealth of knowledge regarding this in IPSC Canada. I'm new to the open game.
Thanks in advance guys.

no different than any other competition gun.
keep up maintenance of springs, extractors. keep spare battery tray for the optic if its made of plastic (yes, they do/can break)
stay ahead of trigger work and keep an eye out on sear wear every season and replace before it becomes a problem.
If your serious into the sport, you'll run a backup (or just money to burn) as if your willing to spend $2k and travel to the nationals each year it would be a shame if your trip was concluded because of a $8 part that nobody had or worse.

You should have a full rebuild of parts on standby, included tested sears/springs, lots of pins (If you drop one during assembly)

If you shoot for fun. Keep some springs handy and pin sets.

I've seen Trubors still going strong with 100K rounds through them.

So long as you don't mess with it; STI warrants the 2011 Open guns they build for the lifetime of the gun.
Crack a slide - replaced - break a barrel - replaced - frame cracks - replaced.

Extractors, ejectors - wear items that last as long as anything else...

(Mess with it example - turn the slide into Swiss cheese)

Thanks, Shawn. Another question would be peoples thoughts on 9mm vs 38 super, what do most Canadian IPSC shooters run?

I have a feeling most people run 9 major from what I have seen, from live experience, people running 38 super ''run'' for their brass!

Is there a good resource to find all the different powders available for 9mm major loads. I looked at Enos forums and it takes forever to sift through the pages and same as here, some very unreliable advice. Thanks.

CFE Pistol
Autocomp
3N37
3N38
HS6

All of those will make major in 9mm.

CFE is really good for 9 major, HS6 tends to burn more dirty, CFE is probably the best bang for the buck. 250$ ish for 8lb jug from hummasons. VV 3n38 is about double the price. 3n37 is not recommended for 9 major, its runs very hot.

Oh, but the Vhit is so clean and meters so precisely! It's such a pleasure to work with.
At Area 6, I had a 6 FPS spread at the chrono - the guy running it asked the type of powder I was using - I answered "Vhitivouri" and the replay was "whaaaaaaaaaaa?????":confused:
(I don't sell powder, BTW...)

I agree. I like 3N38 the best for the reasons mentioned above. it also produces a lot of gas volume to work the comp.

Autocomp and CFE Pistol are the least expensive options but I don't feel they work quite as well.
