Finally after years of looking, saving and trading, I have aquired the holy grail (in my eyes) of both style, function and performance. The STI 2011 Tactical ds in .40, making me ready to jump into standard division, or am I?

After viewing the rules and regulations on allowable firearms for standard division, I set my goals for acquiring this particular firearm, having achieved my goal I was excited to tell other members of my range the news only to have my achievement deemed a wasted effort. I was informed that the firearm could not be used in standard division strictly due to the accessory rail milled in the dust cover. I know in classic division, rails are allowed up to a predetermined length, and for standard only porting of the barrel is prohibited, providing the firearm fits in the box with all magazines that you will be using, but what of accessory rails milled into full length dust covers for standard division guns?

Could anybody shine some light on this for me, show me in the rules where it states his claim, and if it be true, who would I talk to in attempts to bring this ruling up for debate. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks

Thanks, that was the same conclusion I came to after reading the rules and few times over, 1/2” +\- dust cover with a couple groves machines out of it shouldn’t by any ruling I have seen, made it non- approved for that division. Just unfortunate I took an experienced shooters word soo quickly. Could have made a terrible mistake by listing it for a different model. Will keep my eyes out for more opinions on the matter.

Tractor guy, the STI Tactical DS from the factory will fit the IPSC standard division box, it doesn’t have ports or Optics so it is therefore 100% legal for IPSC Standard division competition. Unless you do something crazy to it like add massive thumb safeties or a huge thumb rest, you’re ok.

As a rule of thumb for standard, the question to solve is “does it fit the box and does it not have ports or optics.” If the answe is yes, the gun is good.

The primary reason you don’t see a lot of tactical ds is because it comes with a Novak rear sight cut that can accommodate either a small adjustable sight (the TAS) or a fixed sight, while the Edge or DVC Limited have a bomar or LPA cut accommodating those rear sights.
