I am thinking of buying an STI for IPSC. Can anyone who owns one give me feedback on it. Does having the sight on the barrel make any real difference?

Not really. Depending on the make and purpose, less sight movement, better accuracy. With Slide mounted sight, a bull barrel plus a better fitting bushing will also give a good accuracy. But is the slide is wobbly, you tend to get a not so good accuracy. A small slide play regardless if it's horizontal or vertical factors in a few millimeters to few centimeters out of your shot at distances 10 m and farther. STI Apeiro is a good pistol, expensive and I think worth every penny for your purpose. You might also consider checking out CZ 75 Tactical Sport.

The advantage is in sight tracking during recoil, a sight mounted on the barrel doesn't cycle with the slide it just lifts and settles. In the old days, before dots, race guns had the front sight mounted on the comp which gave the same effect (and made a longer sight radius) shooting a Sight Tracker or Apeiro type gun gives the same visual input.

I've been running an Edge in Standard for about 8 years and 125K+ rounds.

I've replaced one barrel link and a recoil master spring, and I upgraded the stock extractor to an AFTEC. Not bad for the years of pounding it has taken.

Sean gives great service and he stocks everything you will ever need for parts. I wouldn't consider anything else at this point.
