I'm currently using a Glock 34 9mm for IPSC Standard and I do pretty well with it but I'd like to start getting some points advantage moving up to Major with a .40. Taking cost into consideration which would you recommend between the pistols mentioned above and why?

I've been considering the same for the future, and asked around. Generally speaking, most people recommend the STI Edge. I've heard mixed reviews about the Tanfoglio, with the main complaint being durability. However, almost everyone who recommended the Edge also recommended a number of upgrades. I asked a sponsor here about the final cost for bringing an Edge "up to snuff" and the price was ~ $3200. Without mags, if I recall.

Given that number, I've even given thought to an Open gun at some point, but all this is a ways off for me.

What changes would you need for Standard class? What are you using now?

Take a good look at Bul M-5 IPSC, Marstar sells them, they take S_I mags too.
I friend of mine shoots one in USPSA L/L10 and IPSC Std., he let me try it - nice gun!!

You pretty much have to have a trigger job (at least) done on a standard gun. I had to do that on a new STI open gun, so there is no escape!

The end result is very good though, and it is very difficult to go back so beware.

Funny that you say that cause I was considering that one too since I own the Bul M5 in .45 already. Its just the mags that was giving me an issue. What is SI?

I have to say Tanfoglio Limited Custom. I have two.. I cant compare to an STI because i have never shot one but have to say i just love my Limited Custom. The trigger is fantastic right out of the box on both my guns and works in nicely with a few thousand rounds. It fits in the box with a mag no problem!.. although it is tight with the last edition of the IPSC box. So i just took a file and removed 1/16 off the beaver tail.

The barrel is polygonal rifling and both of my guns have a nice long throat which allows you to load your rounds out to 1.2" OAL. Gives you a lot of latitude when load development. Easy to tear down and clean.. and i like the look.

There are some drawback tho.. i had the LPA rear site break 3 times on my first gun.. and the frame did crack but thanks to the great warranty got a new one in a month. That is why i both the second gun because i was expecting the usual 6 months to a year down time ... The mags do split if you drop them on cement repeatedly but now they have fixed that with no laser cut mags.

The fit and finish is excellent on Tanfoglio guns..

AS for the Bul.. a budy of mine just got one last year and loves his and is always beating the pants off of me at practise every week. You can get the Tanfoglios for $1800 for the Limited custom and about $2200 for the Limited Custom II..(Freedom Ventures top of this page) The mags are expensive but the new uncut mags will last a life time. So no problem here.

If you get a Tanfoglio you will not regret it.. Quite a few people in Manitoba have gone to them in the past year with few complaints.

Fair Warning

When you get your Bul, check it very carefully to make sure it fits into the IPSC "Box". I have one. The three mags it came with from Marstar did not fit into the box. Marstar rectified this for me> I checked again and now I need to dremel a wee bit off the magwell as it is a wee little bit too thick. Other than those gripes I really like my Bul. Very accurate and a sweet trigger from the box. Have fun.

Thanks for the info but it'll only really be checked that closely in a level 3 match. What mags are you using other than the three that came with yours?

X2. I have a Limited Custom II and shoot .40 major, and soon will be shooting a few times with .357 sig top end in the open class.

Love the gun, and ergonomics. Plus a lot of goodies are available for the Tango in 'off the shelf' format, so any upgrades you do are plug and play, rather than requiring the services of a gunsmith to 'make it fit'

STI Edge is also a good gun, but too thick in the grip for me to hold properly.
Bad hold = bad gun mechanics= poor score.

In 2008 I put my Limited Custom .40 in the box at the Nationals....pressed the rear sight in and it went in. I tried recently with the boxes available in NB, and found the beavertail had a problem fitting in. I had to shave down the tail by over 1mm. This was using Henning mag pads that are box legal.
