Please somebody explain is there and what would be an advantage of a guide rod (plastic or steel) with recoil spring vs. the factory Recoil Master on STI Edge in competition shooting (IPSC, IDPA, etc.)?
It's personal preference. I don't like them myself. Reduces weight - a plus or negative again debatable on preference. Less perceived muzzle flip? Maybe Less recoil spring to push muzzle back down after shot? Maybe. Try it out. Try out all kinds of different options with spring weights. I found the "all the rage" thing (light is right) that everyone was attempting in pistols wasn't for me in the end.
I hate the fact that you need that little plastic doohicky to dissassemble. Bought a Dawson tooless guide rod. I can dissasemble it easily. That is in my edge. Roger Kotenko at Dark built me a sti single stack with a custom made
mercury filled guide rod. It shoots SO smothly that I can't complain about the short piece of aluminum arrow shaft and paper clip that's needed to dissassemble.
I couldn't percieve much of a difference between the recoil master and the Dawson rod, wheras, I can with the mercury filled one. Mind you with three young kids I don't get to the range enough to give you an expert opinion.
