STI Legacy - poor reliability?

I was just reading the review of the STI legacy in the new G&A. Sounds like they experienced lots of failures with it, although they had only one mag with the test gun. I was quite surprised. I always thought STI was second to none (especially a model that is $2K+).

most STI's are very tight from factory.

most guys will lap the slide and frame a couple hundred times before use...

G&A has to be one of the worst mags out there.

Can't comment on the Legacy which is supposed to be their new high end single stack, having never shot/seen one.

But it wouldn't be the first time someone messed up. Even from a good company, the real test is in how they deal with it. Also I suspect these are REALLY tight due to being the high end high finish model.

+1 G&A is a pretty pathetic magazine. If American Handgunner said something, I'd be concerned.

I'll see what the Skinners (STI owners) say about the article.
I've got my first Legacy due in in the next shipment.

Frankly, I stopped buying the gun magazines, even including AH. I was getting sick od seeing advertising dollars affect the content and direction of the articles.

American Handgunner was the least offencive in this regard.

From the picture of the Legacy, I very much like the rear sight.

low profile and adjustable. Looks like part of the slide is trimmed off in the rear for the sight.
Similiar to USP Expert slide, trimmed down in the back for slightly lower profile; much better than riding squarely on top of the slide.

I have been using STI products since they came to market. Good quality and support. I have no complaints and would recommend them to anyone.

The rear sight is STI's Tactical Adjustable Sight. It fits the Heinie / Novak cut. It can be fitted in the other STI fixed sight guns too like the tacticals or the RangerII. I actually have a Trojan in 9mm with one in it. I'm trying to keep stock on these sights.

I talked with STI a minute ago. They aren't really disappointed with the G&A article, they were happy about how it was mentioned that the gun was turned around for repair quickly (I guess an extractor broke?) - STI is always very concerned about customer support. The accuracy was very good. They would have liked more review on the PVD finish, as that is the highlight of the Legacy. There was a Legacy at the SHOT show with 1000 rounds through it, and you could not see any wear on the barrel, which has that PVD finish too. That was really slick.

I like sights on 1911s that are melted into the slide, it looks much better IMHO.

But with that picture that Musky Hunter posted, wtf is with that gap between the sight and the slide? Couldnt they fit it a little better?

Edit: oh, wait, I see that the sight appears to be adjustable....I guess that will give you some room for up and down movement.......

Granted, they did say they had only one mag with the test gun, and so could not rule out the mag as a cause of the malfunctions. But, in any case, I've heard so many good things about STI that this article certainly would not turn me off their products.

I'm looking forward to seeing the PVD finish as an option on their whole product line...

I've been aware of these types of finishes for several years and been wondering when someone would bring them to the production firearms market.

The best of them are nearly as hard as diamond and slicker than teflon. Without risk of wear, corrosion or flaking... What more could one want on a firearm, these investments for life?

Any chance of these being available in .40 S&W at some point??
I would have initially said no, but the Ranger II, after a couple of years got expanded to 9mm and 40, so I'll say give it a year.

As for the melted in sight, yes - you're right - that gap is the elevation adjustment in the TAS. They look better in person.

PVD is cool, but I think that's a big chunk of the cost of the Legacy. I'll bet it's at least $500 of it.

$500 for PVD is a way better deal than $300 for Hardchrome. And I bet if they'd make it an option on all their guns they'd boost their volumes and be able to sell it cheaper.

So are you saying that they are lying and about the malfunctions? Why would they want to do that?
I doubt they are lying - just that based on the general quality of the magazine, the analysis would be lacking.
Sort of Like having Martha Stewart road test Porsches for Car and Driver...

I dont have a Legacy, but I do have a STI Trojan 45,and the gun was terribly unreliable the first 500 rds or so.Needed decent mags (Tripp Cobra mags) and a breaking in period and now it shoots great, havent had a jam for a few thousand rounds now,Seems strange that you cant have a high end 1911 shoot reliably out of the box (I cant recall "breaking in " my Beretta 92!),but there you are.Having said that,I really like my Trojan now, although during those first few hundred rounds almost felt like getting rid of it.Could be the same situation with this particular gun.
