Hey everybody I'm not huge on pistols this is my second one I only have a 22 and just got this 45 in a trade I seem to be having this problem that when I pull the trigger and the safety is engaged the safety lowers and the hammer strikes the firing pin anybody help me out with this I have a feeling it's just a minor adjustment

No,this is not a minor problem. It sounds like the safety is not blocking the sear, probably someone has "adjusted"the safety or installed a new one and taken off too much of the pad that blocks the sears rearward movement.

Checks for sear/safety engagement would be to #### the hammer, put the safety on,pull the trigger, take safety off, hammer shouldnt fall.Second would be the "click" test:#### hammer, apply safety, pull trigger, then carefully listen to whether you can hear the sear click into engagement with the hammer.A positive test indicates the safety is not blocking the sear.

Either the way the gun isnt safe and you likely need a new safety fitted by a gunsmith who knows their way around 1911s.It sounds`like you are new to 1911s so this is likely not a do it yourself job.

Some one who didn't know what they are doing fitted that safety. It is useless, but not the end of the world because they aren't very expensive to replace. Take the gun apart and see if you find anything wrong. Youtube has some really good take down tutorials.
