STI Trojan - Range Review:
My brand-spankin-new STI Trojan in 45acp has arrived by way of Gunnar at Armco, sporting a FO front sight and Armco trigger job.
First impressions: The Trojan lives up to its hype. Out of the box, the Trojan sits solidly in your hand. The action cycles as if it's on ball-bearings, and the fit-and-finish is impeccable. I imagine that a Swiss bank vault locks up this tightly. I really like the standard wood grips, the texture works well with the frontstrap stippling and backstrap (mainspring housing) checkering. I bought this primarily as a largebore Bullseye gun, so I was very happy to see that all the moving components locked up tight, tight, tight.
Fast forward a day, and I hit the range. The first three shots were two-handers at 15 meters, to get a feel for where the sights were at. Turns out all three being in the 9-ring or better.
It was obvious at this point that Gunnar at Armco had dialed it in! The trigger job he did was awesome: a short and predictable take-up that broke cleanly at about 3 1/4 #. Sending the target back to 25 m, is followed up with ten more 230gr Federal loads.
At this point its safe to say that I have no regrets over selling my 226r to fund my first 1911. I'm really looking forward to developing loads as well, to see what kind of accuracy is possible.
In no way am I knocking polymer pistols - in fact a G17 is at the top of my wish list. I'm just saying that there is something about a 100+ year-old design all-steel pistol that really appeals to me.
I never would have known about STI and the amazing work that they do if it wasn't for this awesome forum! For anyone considering an American-made 1911, you should definitely look STI. A very generous forum member invited me out to their range and let me test-drive his Spartan before I purchased this one, so I had a good idea on what STI quality was like before putting money down - thanks again
I also suggest that anyone considering a 1911 check out Triguns excellent sticky above, pointing to http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1269683.
